Pity From My Rich Sister? Oops, Her New Family Came Begging Chapter 06

Merrick took a step forward as if he meant to say something.

Keaton’s glass hung suspended in his hand, disbelief written across his face.

“How is this even possible?”

Ottilie forced a smile.

“Carys, I had no idea you’d become so successful. I’m truly happy for you.”

I glanced at her clenched hand.

“That might sound more convincing if your nails weren’t digging into your palm.”

Her expression stiffened. The smile stayed, but only barely.

My parents finally seemed to recover from the shock.

Every trace of anger had vanished from my mother’s face. In its place was something I had never

seen directed at me before.

Eagerness. Almost desperation.

She hurried over to Ambrose, smiling so hard the corners of her eyes creased.

“Mr. Kincaid, there’s nothing to worry about. Carys is my daughter. Of course she’ll work with the family. Let’s finish the celebration first, then we can all sit down and discuss the details together.”

“Family?”

I repeated the word quietly.

“You weren’t calling me family when you threw me out five minutes ago.”

The ballroom fell silent again.

Merrick’s face shifted between red and pale. Keaton lowered his head, looking as though he wished

the floor would swallow him.

Then a young man spoke.

“Grandpa.”

He wore a sharply tailored navy suit. There was enough resemblance to Rhodes to mark them as

relatives, but his expression was steadier and far more calculating.

I recognized him from Elodie’s Instagram.

Leander Kincaid, Rhodes’s older cousin and greatest rival for control of the family business.

“Grandpa,” he said, stepping closer, “you should know what happened before you arrived.”

His tone remained perfectly respectful.

“The Calders threw Dr. Calder out in front of everyone. Rhodes backed them.”

He glanced at his cousin, his expression touched with perfectly measured regret.

“He told her to go.”

Rhodes went pale.

Leander went on, his tone even.

“Dr. Calder is the one person who can get our neural-interface program moving again. Throwing

her out of a Kincaid event wasn’t just disrespectful. It may have cost us the partnership.”

Rhodes opened his mouth, then stopped.

There was no point denying it. The entire ballroom had heard him.

Ambrose said nothing.

The silence lasted only a few seconds, but sweat had already gathered along Rhodes’s forehead.

Ambrose tapped his cane once against the marble floor and looked at him.

“If Dr. Calder isn’t welcome here, then the reception can continue without us.”

He turned and gestured toward the doors.

“Dr. Calder and I are leaving.”

Rhodes’s face drained of color.

“Grandpa!”

He rushed forward and blocked Ambrose’s path.

“The ceremony is about to start. You can’t leave now.”

Ambrose stared at him, his disappointment unmistakable.

“Do you have any idea how many favors I called in just to secure this meeting?”

“And after all that, you and your fiancée tried to throw Dr. Calder out.”

His voice hardened.

“Now you expect me to stay?”

He dismissed Rhodes with a glance, then nodded to me.

“Dr. Calder. Shall we?”

I picked up my bag and walked past them toward the exit.

Behind me, Elodie’s composure finally cracked.

“Carys…”

I didn’t turn around.
