Mrs. Sterling let go. Ashamed. Her head dropped. Tears slid down in silence.

Ethan and I got in the car. As the engine turned over, Derek was still on his knees at the gate. Motionless. A man who didn’t know where else to go.

“Savannah. Please.”

I didn’t want to see it anymore. This belated, worthless performance of devotion. I left with Ethan. Didn’t look back.

The next day. Our car had just reached the foothills of the Smokies. I saw Derek’s new Instagram post.

“One last time at the fight club. Saying goodbye to the past. #NoRegrets #RockBottom”

He’d tagged me. I swiped past. Then blocked him.

Marcus commented underneath, frantic.

“That place got shut down by Metro PD ages ago. What the hell are you doing? You got a death wish?”

“Are you insane? We almost died there last time! What are you trying to prove?”

Derek replied with a bitter-laugh emoji.

“One last gamble. If she still has any feelings for me, she’ll come. Like last time. She’ll come save me.”

Marcus probably had nothing left to say. No more replies.

After all. It was his choice.

Late that night. Derek showed up at the abandoned underground fight venue. Empty now. Trash everywhere. Graffiti.

He waited. A long, long time. No call from me. No sign of me.

Marcus called him again. Multiple times.

“Go home, brother. She’s not coming. She’s someone else’s wife now.”

“Don’t throw your life away over a woman. It’s not worth it. You’ve still got a life ahead of you.”

Derek wouldn’t accept it. He used a number I’d already blocked. Dialed my number.

“Savannah. You really don’t care anymore? Seeing me here. It means nothing to you?”

His voice was desperate. That familiar edge of emotional blackmail. I just felt disgust.
