On My Wedding Day, I Married Someone Else Chapter 16

Ethan and I spent three days at home. Peace. No outside world.

With the wedding leave still open, we decided to take a short trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fresh air.

I didn’t expect to open the door and find Derek.

He’d clearly been waiting in the manicured holly bushes for a long time. The moment he saw us, he burst out of the greenery and grabbed my arm. Brutal strength.

“Savannah. Stop. You can’t just leave like this.”

Ethan stepped in front of me instantly. His chest blocking Derek.

“Let go. Now.”

Derek’s eyes were fixed on me. Disheveled hair. Bloodshot. Reeking of stale alcohol and decay.

“Five minutes. Please. Just five minutes.”

I pulled my arm back. His hand closed on air. He swayed like he might fall.

Then his knees buckled. A heavy thud. He dropped onto the flagstone path in front of my porch.

“I know I was wrong. The house. Tiffany. Your scar. Every foul thing I said. All of it. My fault. Please. Forgive me.”

His shaking hands pulled a blue Tiffany ring box from his crumpled suit pocket. Opened it. His grandmother’s antique diamond. The one I once dreamed about.

“You said. If I ever turned back. You’d always be there waiting for me. Like my mother waited for my father to come home from war.”

I looked down at the ring. Nothing but bitter irony.
