Davidson County Judicial Center. Front entrance.

Both families had arrived. Derek’s and Savannah’s relatives. Women in beautiful dresses. Men in suits. Only the bride and her family were missing.

Derek pulled up late. Tiffany in the passenger seat.

He saw the scene. The weird, awkward silence. Something cold poured down his spine. A premonition like ice water.

“What the hell… Did Savannah get lost? Car accident?”

He didn’t let himself finish the thought.

He pulled out his phone and dialed me. Again. Again. Cold voicemail every time.

He yanked at his silver-gray tie. His face darkened. Curses started slipping out.

On the twelfth call, it connected.

Derek practically screamed. His voice echoed down the quiet hallway.

“Savannah! Where are you? Jesus Christ, do you understand there are forty people from both families standing here waiting for you? Where the fuck are you?”

I sat in a moving car. Watching the familiar Nashville skyline retreat outside the window.

“I already signed the papers with someone else. I’m at home now.”

In the room, my favorite Norah Jones album drifted through the space.

A tall man stood at the kitchen island. Opening a bottle of Veuve Clicquot to celebrate.

Derek’s brain blanked.

“Where are you? I don’t see you. Explain!”

I held up my phone. Let him hear the background. The sound of home.

“Listen.”

Jazz. The crisp, celebratory pop of a champagne cork. Clear through the line.

Derek’s body locked. Like he’d been electrocuted. The blood drained from his face. His voice shook uncontrollably.

“You’re… you’re at our house? The one on Oak Street?”

“Are you insane? I closed on that house last week! The buyer already has it. You’re trespassing!”
