Everett didn’t let me out of bed for three days.

I blacked out and didn’t come to until dawn. While he was still sleeping, I dragged myself out of bed and booked a doctor’s appointment.

I’d already dug into Sloane’s history. Both her parents were dead. No living relatives.

Which meant I was the real orphan here.

The only family I had left was the baby growing inside me.

I wanted to keep it.

I rushed to Ravenport General, but the comments hit before I even got through the door.

My vision blurred, and I nearly went down.

A hand caught my arm. “Careful.”

I mumbled a thank-you without looking, then froze. “Nolan Reid?”

We’d met when I was in college. One of the only real friends I’d ever made.

He went still for a second, then his whole face lit up.

“Winona? What are you doing here?! I’ve been looking for you since I got back…”

When you’re a crime boss’s girlfriend, you don’t get to keep friends. Everett’s world swallowed my old life whole.

Running into Nolan here felt like a miracle.

I scrapped my plan to bribe some random doctor and begged Nolan to do the prenatal exam himself, off the books.

But when the results came back, something in Nolan’s face changed.

My stomach dropped. “Is something wrong with the baby?”

“It’s nothing serious. It’s just…”

Nolan’s jaw tightened. “Winona, who the hell is the father? What kind of animal leaves marks like this on you when you’re pregnant…”

I clenched my fists in my lap and gave him the short version. Then I begged.

“Nolan, you still have connections, right? In the underground? Can you help me get away from Everett…”

“Babe, what did you just say?”

I didn’t get to finish.

The air in the room died.

Everett stood behind me. His eyes were locked on Nolan, and there was nothing human in them.

“Who the hell is this, and why are you in… the OB/GYN ward?”
