Emily shook her head. “Alpha, I don’t know.”

Elijah pulled out his phone and called Audrey.

Blocked.

He tried the mind link.

Nothing. Dead silence.

Why?

They had agreed it was just temporary. Audrey knew he loved her most. He would never really break the bond.

Was she angry about her face? About the cuts?

“Emily. The night it happened—I texted you to send a healer to the house for Audrey. Did you?”

“Alpha, I never got a text from you.”

“What?”

Elijah checked his sent messages.

Nothing.

He meant to text the servants. But Kelly stopped him. He forgot.

Damn it.

“Audrey wouldn’t really break the bond. She loves me too much. Right, Emily?”

He didn’t know if he was trying to convince her or himself.

“She’s just mad. I’ll find her. We’ll fix this.”

“Alpha.” Emily hesitated. “You should go upstairs.”

“Is she still up there?”

He ran.

He pushed open the bedroom door.

And his face went white.

The room was destroyed. Blood everywhere. Sticky, dried blood.

In the center of the room, a chair. On the chair, silver chains. A whip crusted with blood.

Elijah staggered.

“Is this… all Audrey’s?”

It was just a scratch on her face. How could there be this much blood?

No. It had to be fake. A prank. Audrey wanted to make him feel guilty.

Yes. That was it.

Emily followed him in. She had kept the room exactly like this. She

wanted him to see what he’d done.

“Alpha, this was too much. Even if you don’t love her anymore, you could have ended things decently. We all saw how much she gave you for five years. She really loved you. And you cut her face yourself. Then you had her tied up and whipped ninety-nine times. That’s just —”

“What did you say?”

Elijah spun around. “Ninety-nine lashes? Who ordered that?”

The maid frowned. “Wasn’t it you? The two new servants said it was your order. The mistress was beaten so badly she was covered in blood…”

He couldn’t hear the rest.

He stared at the blood on the floor. His heart felt like someone had carved a piece out of it.

“Where are those two servants?”

“They didn’t come in today. But Alpha—Luna said to check your email. She sent you a video.”

“A video?”

His hands shook as he pulled out his phone.

He opened his email.

The first one. From Audrey. Four days ago.

He hadn’t looked at his phone in days. He hadn’t known.

He opened it.

One video.

He pressed play.

Kelly’s smug face filled the screen.
