No Longer His Donna Chapter 10

One day, just after a round of treatments, sweat pouring down my face, I reached for a glass of water when I

saw someone utterly unexpected.

Xander.

He had actually come here.

“What are you doing here? It’s dangerous. You need to go.”

Instead, he held out his hand to me. “You stole my gold ring. Give it back.”

I almost laughed. “That was mine. I have every right to take it back.”

I stood to leave, and he grabbed my wrist.

“Tina, you can’t just take back a gift. Give it to me. Now.”

“That ring doesn’t belong to you anymore.”

The words were barely out of my mouth when more wounded arrived. I rushed to tend to them. Xander just stood there watching. In the chaos, I snapped at him, “Go get hemostatic supplies! Now!”

Once things calmed down, I led Xander to a relatively safer spot. Some things needed to be said clearly.

He looked at me, and in his eyes, I saw something that looked like… admiration.

“Tina, you’ve really grown up. You don’t need to rely on me anymore.”

“I saw you tending to those patients just now. You were… incredible.”

“It seems sending you to work with Doctors Without Borders was the right call after all.”

“Xander, you think any of this is your credit?”

I looked at him.

“All of this, I earned through my own perseverance. I made myself grow up.”

“Three years ago, I was fresh out of school, a girl who knew nothing about the world.”

“When I first started working here, I couldn’t adjust to anything. I saw hundreds, thousands of people die before my eyes every single day.

And I had to keep my own emotions in check to tend to the rest. I broke down crying every day.

But I told myself to hold on. Just hold on for three years, and I could go back to New York.”

“But when I went back… I found you with another woman. And I found out you had ordered Nick to stop me from coming home.”

At my words, he froze in place. A strange shock flashed in his eyes.

“I… was wrong.”

“Before… I thought you were so much younger than me, that we weren’t suited. So I forced myself to be with

someone else. But once I was… I realized the person I truly loved was you. I couldn’t stop loving you.”

“Tina, come back with me. Don’t stay here. It’s too dangerous.”

I let out a cold laugh. “Dangerous now? Where were you before?”

“Xander, the greatest regret of my life was falling for you.”

“But thankfully, I don’t care for you anymore. I have a better man by my side now. We’re already married.”

“What did you say?” His face was a mask of utter disbelief.

“How could you possibly have the heart to fall in love here? You’re lying to me.”

“He’s my comrade. And the man I love deeply. He can guide me forward. He gives me a sense of stability in this place of gunfire and chaos.”

“Xander, just leave. I really don’t love you anymore.”

His eyes instantly reddened. He shook his head wildly.

“That’s impossible… impossible…

I just walked away.

Every minute, every second here was precious. I didn’t want to waste any of it on him.

The next day, I met up with Damian. We were being relocated to another area.
