He hung up and looked at me, an apology already forming on his face.

“Tessa, I’m so sorry. Elara fainted from low blood sugar. She’s at the hospital now. I have to go check on her.”

Before I could say a word, Maddox was on his feet, grabbing his coat.

“Let’s go. I’ll come with you.”

It was happening exactly like it did last time.

As soon as something happened to Elara, they would drop everything—and everyone—for her.

Sterling was still trying to smooth things over.

“Tessa, you eat first. We’ll get her settled and come right back. It won’t take long.”

They left in a hurry.

The private room fell silent.

I looked at the table full of food that had barely been touched and didn’t wait a single second longer.

I picked up my coat and called the server over.

“Check, please.”

Outside the restaurant, the night wind was cold and sharp against my face.

But for the first time, I felt completely clear-headed.

I took out my phone, blocked Maddox and Sterling’s numbers, and deleted all their social media accounts.

This time, I wasn’t going to wait for them.

I hailed a cab and went straight home.

When I opened the door, the apartment was nearly empty.

Aside from a few suitcases belonging to my grandmother and me, there was little trace of the life I’d lived here.

I took off the dress that had been ruined at the party and threw it directly into the trash can.

The last lingering attachment I had for my old life went with it.

I walked into my grandmother’s room.

She was already asleep, her breathing slow and steady.

I pulled the quilt up a little higher on her shoulder and kissed her forehead.

This time, I would get her away from all of this.
