I never expected Serena to be that vicious.

The storage room was tiny-

so small that Knox and I were pressed against each other, his chin resting on top of my head.

I liked being in a tight space with someone I cared about.

It felt safe.

Serena was still on the phone.

I sensed the shift in his energy and looked up.

His face was cold-not at me, but at what she’d said.

His eyes were dark and dangerous.

My forehead brushed against his nose, making a faint sound.

Outside, Serena’s head turned toward the door.

“Hold on,” she said to whoever was on the phone.

She walked toward the storage room. I tensed.

If she found us here, she’d know we’d heard everything.

That would make it harder to stay ahead of her.

Knox pulled me closer.

She stopped just short of the door.

Maybe she thought it was a mouse-she turned and hurried out.

As she left, I caught the tail end of her call.

“Three months ago, when I met Knox at the hotel, he-”

The door clicked shut, cutting off her voice.

Knox didn’t let go.

I thought about what she’d said.

I took my chance.

“Knox. That night at the hotel with Serena-what happened?”

He explained: “I always knew it was you I was talking to online.”

“I thought you were the one who wanted tu mcet:”

“When I rang the doorbell and Serena opened it, I walked out.”

He’d known all along.

I muttered, “But the next morning, she came to work with marks on her neck…”

“That wasn’t me.”

“I barely said two words to her. I came back that night and slept in your room.”

He said it plainly. “My heart and my body have always been yours.”

That was the night he’d slept in my bed-the comments had mentioned it.

Everything clicked.

We looked at each other. Our eyes met, tangling like vines.

His voice dropped low.

“Baby, I want to kiss you.”

I wanted that too.

I nodded.

Closed my eyes.

Half an hour later, we stepped out of the storage room.

We’d been kissing in there for thirty minutes.

We were breathless, but it felt incredible.

In that tight space, it was just us.

No outside noise. Just our heartbeats.

It felt like the rest of the world had disappeared.
