My Wife Longed for My Foster Brother Chapter 08 Fake

August paused. His gaze swept over her face–and moved on.

He turned back to the CAA/director and kept talking.

Behind Cassandra, Derek’s eyes darkened. He clenched his fists.

Cassandra didn’t give up. She stepped in front of August and grabbed his arm. “Hubby, thank God you’re okay. Do you know how worried I was?”

Her hand was slapped away.

‘Don’t touch him. He’s busy.”

Cassandra stared. A young woman was standing beside August, her hand still raised from the slap. She’d been hidden by August’s body before.

Cassandra recognized her. Summer Blake–the only daughter of the Blake family in Kingsport.

Her face darkened. “August, what is this supposed to mean?”

The CAA director, sensing the tension, led them into a private conference room.

“Alright,” Cassandra said, crossing her arms. “There are no outsiders here now. I want an explanation. Who is she?”

Summer, the young heiress, leaned against August’s shoulder, grinning at Cassandra without a trace of fear. “It’s exactly what it looks like. August and I are getting engaged. The engagement party is next month –but you don’t need to come. August doesn’t like you! If you showed up, you’d ruin the mood for everyone.”

Cassandra laughed coldly. “Do you know why August is with you? Because we had a fight. He wasn’t thinking clearly, and he dragged you in to get back at me.”

“You’re nothing to him–just a toy he’s playing with. I’m the only woman he’ll ever truly love,”

She turned to August, her voice dripping with honey. “Hubby, come home with me. I promise I’ll never lose my temper at you again. I’ll never fight with you again. Whatever you want to do, I’ll listen. We can have lots of children together-”

Summer’s eyes blazed. “Cassandra, do you have no shame at all?!”

She swung her purse at Cassandra. August caught her wrist.

“New bag,” he said gently. “Not worth damaging it on her. I’ll handle this.”

He helped Summer put her purse back on her shoulder, then turned to Cassandra. “Miss Vance. You and I are already over. You’re an adult–you should understand that some things end. Please stop harassing me and my fiancée.”

Cassandra’s smile froze. “What is that supposed to mean? I never signed the divorce papers!”

“Divorce papers?” August let out a soft, sad laugh. “Do we even freed divorce papers, Cassandra? You know better than anyone whether our marriage certificate was ever real.”

Cassandra’s heart dropped.

So he knew.

She and Derek had planned it from the beginning. Once Derek secured power at Sterling Group, she would leave August. To make sure she could get out cleanly, she’d bribed the right people and gotten two fake marriage certificates. August had hired the best photographer in the country to document the day, saying he wanted to give her a beautiful memory. She’d laughed at him in her heart:

He had known all along.

‘Cassandra,” August said, “between us, there was never a marriage in name, and never one in reality. Let’s just let go. It’ll be easier for everyone. And it’ll save you from having to come up with excuses every day for the things you keep hidden in the study.”

Cassandra’s face flushed red–like she’d been slapped.

He knew about those too. He’d always known.

And he had never confronted her. He had let her keep lying, day after day, because he loved her.

She couldn’t bring herself to ask why.

Because she already knew the answer.

He had loved her.

And she had shattered it.
