My Twin Sister Became His Second Luna Chapter 08

The day Kaelen received the no-confidence motion, Nerys was going through his desk.

She found two documents in the bottom drawer.

One was a draft resolution from the council demanding the temporary removal of his military command authority. The other was an unsigned mate dissolution agreement.

When Kaelen pushed open the door, papers were scattered across the carpet.

Nerys stood in the middle of the room, pale.

“You’re going to dissolve our mate bond?”

“You went through my encrypted drawer?”

“I’m asking if you’re abandoning me!”

Kaelen was silent for a moment, then closed the door.

“Yes.”

One word made Nerys stumble backward.

“I knew it. You regret it. You want to bring her back.”

“This has nothing to do with Nerissa.”

“How can it not? The elders compare me to her every day! The warriors say they never lost a supply depot when she was here. The Healers say she never let the medical budget fall behind. Now even you think she’d make a better Luna than me!”

“Because that’s the truth.”

For the first time, Kaelen didn’t soothe her.

“You don’t have to know how to make patrol schedules, and you don’t have to understand the finances. But when residents in the east had to evacuate, you refused to go to the shelter because it didn’t have a private room for you. When the council questioned you, you even said in front of everyone that Pack affairs had nothing to do with you. Nerys, being Luna isn’t about wearing a pretty moon crown.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“But who was it that said Nerissa was boring and too controlling? Who said you felt free only when you were with me?”

“I did.” Kaelen closed his eyes briefly. “Back then, I took everything she carried for me for granted.”

“So you admit you regret it.”

He didn’t answer.

The silence was answer enough.

Nerys grabbed the silver paperweight from the desk and hurled it at the wall.

“I lost our pup because of you! The Healer said my heart couldn’t withstand the pregnancy, so I had to terminate it. And now you want to dissolve our bond?”

“Losing the baby hurt me, too.” Kaelen’s voice was low. “But we can’t use a pup we’ve already lost to bind us together for the rest of our lives. From the beginning, we used hurting Nerissa to prove our love. That proof is over now.”

“You’ll regret this.” Nerys gritted her teeth. “Crestwood will fall apart without me, too.”

Kaelen glanced at the no-confidence motion on the desk.

“Crestwood is already falling apart.”

Three days later, they began the dissolution ritual before the elders.

When Nerys moved back to Stoneveil, Father had just lost his administrative authority as Alpha. The council kept his title but placed the finances and border affairs under an interim Beta committee.

Kaelen also failed the confidence review. Crestwood didn’t depose him immediately, but it took away his military command and required him to undergo another Alpha qualification review within a year.

Two once powerful Packs had lost their alliance, their heirs, and the trust of their members because of a mate ceremony built on deception.

Only then did they finally begin looking for Nerissa.

Father contacted every registered Pack in Frosthaven; Mother wrote to every weapons laboratory in the North; Kaelen even went to the airport himself to pull the flight records from three years earlier.

No one got a response.

Then, in the third year after Nerissa left, the Frosthaven Defense Technology Summit announced its annual award winners.

A live-combat demonstration video spread rapidly across the Pack network.

In the footage, a black-haired, golden-eyed she-wolf stood in the middle of a snow-covered training ground. She raised her arm. The next second, defensive stakes shot up from the ground, trapping three mechanical rogues that had charged into the position inside an energy net.

She turned toward the camera. The nameplate on her chest was unmistakable:

[Nerissa Ravenn, Chief Weapons Designer, Northstar Tactical Forge.]

The host explained that the modular defense system, named “Freewolf,” had already helped multiple frontier Packs reduce casualties and had won the year’s top innovation award.

Mother played the video over and over until the image showed me turning away from the training field.

At last, she remembered that the papers Nerys had swept into the recycling bin at the Alpha residence three years earlier had never been useless doodles.

They were my earliest weapon designs.
