He picked me up and rushed me to the hospital.

Did you hit her?”

Charles couldn’t answer. He hung up. He sat there, stunned.

He scrambled to his feet. “How is she?”

“Her condition is stable, but she’s still unconscious. The baby didn’t make it.”

His nose stung again. He caught the doctor as he was leaving. “Was it a boy or a girl?”

“A girl.”

Charles followed the gurney into the room like a ghost. He watched my unconscious face, guilt

gnawing at him. He wanted to stay until I woke up, but his phone started buzzing nonstop.

“Mr. Whitmore, we have a problem. Check the news.”
