My Son Learned To Say Goodbye Before I Did Chapter 09

Seeing no point in keeping up the act, Sabrina stopped crying.

She wiped away her tears and let out a cold laugh.

“Yeah, I did it on purpose.”

“But what choice did I have?”

“I’m a divorced woman with a kid. If I don’t latch onto you, what am I supposed to do—starve?”

Grant stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time.

“So this whole time—you’ve been lying to me?”

Sabrina laughed. A bitter, mocking laugh. “Lying?”

“Grant, you were just stupid back then.”

“All I had to do was whine a little about how hard my life was, and you came running—so eager to play the hero.”

“I said Milo was so pitiful without a dad, and there you were—practically begging to be one.”

“Who are you gonna blame?”

Grant’s face went pale. “Back then, didn’t you say your ex-husband tricked you?”

“You said you had to go abroad—for your family.”

Sabrina’s mouth twisted. “And you bought that?”

“I went abroad because that bastard said his family had money.”

“Turned out he was a total fraud. Went bankrupt pretty fast.”

“The second he lost his money, of course I divorced him.”

“When I came back, you were the first person I thought of.”

“You had money. A company. And a wife who was a total pushover.”

Grant’s fists clenched, knuckles going white.

But Sabrina seemed to relish it—the more she talked, the more she got off on it.

“Celeste really was a pushover.”

“I’d post stuff just to jab at her, and she never even made a scene.”

“One call from me, and you’d drop your wife and kid—just like that—and come running.”

“Honestly? I almost admired her. Putting up with you for that long.”

Something flickered in Grant’s eyes—and broke.

Sabrina caught the look on his face and her smile stretched wider.

“What? Feeling heartbroken now?”

“Too late. She already left with Eli this afternoon.”

Grant’s head snapped up. “What did you just say?”

Sabrina pulled out her phone and opened my social media page.

The only post I’d made since landing.

The photo showed Eli holding my hand outside the airport. The caption was short.

[Starting today—a new life. Just Eli and me.]

Below it, one of their friends had commented: [Weren’t you and Grant taking Eli to Adventure Kingdom today?]

My reply: [We’re divorced.]

Those words hit him like a blow. Grant stared at the screen, motionless.

Sabrina was still laughing. “So you didn’t even know? Grant, you’re pathetic.”

“Your wife and son already left you, and there you were—playing daddy to someone else’s kid.”

Suddenly, Grant turned and walked toward the door.

Sabrina shouted after him. “Where are you going?”

Grant never looked back.

Her voice turned shrill. “You think if you go after her now, she’ll forgive you?”

“She was done with you a long time ago!”

Grant faltered—just for a beat. Then he kept walking—faster now.

Sabrina grabbed the water glass from beside the bed and hurled it at him.

The glass shattered against the doorway.

At that exact moment, Milo suddenly began convulsing violently on the hospital bed.

His face went from pale to blue. A horrible wheezing sound came from his throat.

The nurse rushed over. “His airway’s closing up! Get the doctor—now! Prep for intubation!”

Sabrina’s legs buckled. She sank to the floor, terrified.
