My Son Learned To Say Goodbye Before I Did Chapter 03

My heart skipped a beat. I looked up at him.

Grant crouched beside me and placed the strawberry cake near my hand.

His voice carried that familiar mix of helplessness and affection.

“Celeste, I know what you’re thinking. You think I’ve been too good to Sabrina and ignored you and Eli.”

“But I swear, it’s just sympathy. She’s a single mom raising a kid on her own. I just don’t want to see her struggle.”

He took my hand and pressed it solemnly against his chest.

“Just give me a little more time. I’ll sort things out with Sabrina and Milo.”

“I promise, I won’t let you or Eli feel hurt like this again.”

I just stared at him, speechless.

I could barely remember the last time he’d looked at me like that—really looked at me.

Maybe it was at our wedding—in that white chapel, his fingers laced through mine, vowing to cherish me for the rest of his life.

Or maybe it was the day Eli was born.

In the hospital delivery room, he carefully cradled our newborn son in trembling arms before leaning down to kiss my forehead.

Then he whispered, “Celeste, from now on, I’ll never let you or Eli suffer.”

Lost in those memories, I stayed silent for a long, long time.

In the end, I decided to tell him about the divorce. “Grant, actually…”

“Oh, hey,” he cut in. “Where’d you put that blocks set you got for Eli? Was it in the study?”

“Sabrina said Milo’s been really into building blocks lately. I’m gonna bring it over so he can play with it for a few days.”

Without waiting for a reply, Grant went straight to the study, found the box, grabbed his car keys, and headed out the door.

The door slammed shut with a deafening bang. And just like that, he was gone.

I stood there, staring at the door for what felt like forever.

Then I finally finished the sentence I never got to say.

“Actually… Eli and I don’t need you anymore.”

Only two days left before we were gone for good.
