At the sight of my mouth moving, the color drained from Chelsea’s face.

Her mouth opened like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out.

The real chaos hadn’t even started yet.

Uncle Mike scrolled through his phone again, frowning, his voice heavy.

“The five million in my account. Completely wiped out…”

Aunt Linda panicked too.

“Mine too! I just checked my investment account. It’s all gone!”

Mom fumbled to open her own banking app, froze for a second, and her voice changed entirely.

“Mine’s gone too! Mine and your dad’s paychecks, both accounts are empty!”

Dad shot to his feet.

“What?”

He snatched Mom’s phone and looked.

His face went pale.

The comments came fast.

[Even the parents’ money is gone? Let’s see them defend her now.]

[Josie has about fifty bucks left in her account. Being poor really paid off this time, LOL.]

[Chelsea: I stole everyone’s money! The system: wow, you’re SO above it all.] @

I glanced down at my own banking app.

Balance: $0.

The last few dollars I had, along with the ten thousand Uncle Mike had just sent, were both gone.

Cousin Jake hung up his call, his jaw tight.

“The bank says my money was transferred out a few minutes ago. I’m calling 911.”

Then he looked around the table.

“I’m related to everyone here, so once officers arrive, I’m only a witness. I won’t be involved in the investigation.”

“Right, call the police!” Uncle Mike snapped back to attention.

“This many people’s accounts disappearing at once means something is seriously wrong.”

Chelsea’s whole body had started shaking.

She edged toward the door without anyone noticing, but Uncle Dan happened to be standing right in

her way.

She glanced toward the window.

Third floor.

She had nowhere to go without drawing attention.

The comments floated by.

[She’s trying to make a run for it! Look at those tiny little steps!]

[The door is blocked, and everyone would see her at the window, hahaha.]

[Serves her right. Just wait it out.]

Less than twenty minutes later, two police cars pulled up.

Three officers walked into the private dining room.

The lead officer, a man in his forties with sharp eyes, looked around.

“Who called this in?”

Cousin Jake stepped forward.

“I did. More than twenty bank accounts were emptied at nearly the same time. We’re talking about a massive amount.”

He showed the officer his identification.

“I’m also related to everyone here, so I’m stepping back as a witness.”

The officer nodded.

“Understood.”

His eyes swept the room, taking in every panicked face.

“Please remain here while we take statements and document the transfers.”

The younger officer behind him pulled out a tablet and started contacting the banks’ fraud departments.

The air in the room felt like it had been sucked dry.

Nobody spoke.

There were only phones buzzing over and over and the occasional stifled sob.

Chelsea sat with her head down, her knuckles white around her phone.

The comments picked up.

[Scared now? Wasn’t so fun taking all that money, was it?]

[Too bad there’s no running from this anymore.]

[Once the banks trace the receiving account, she’s done.]

After several emergency calls, the younger officer walked over to the lead officer and murmured something.

The lead officer’s frown deepened.

He finally looked up and scanned the crowd.

“Which one of you is Chelsea Bennett?”

Chelsea’s whole body locked up, like she’d been shocked.

Mom nudged her.

“Chelsea, the officer’s talking to you. Don’t be scared. Just cooperate.”

Chelsea rose slowly, her legs shaking.

The officer fixed his eyes on her.

“Is your account the one ending in 3827?”

Chelsea nodded, her lips trembling.

“Based on the preliminary transaction alerts, your account received transfers from twenty-six different accounts within the same six-minute window.”

The officer’s voice wasn’t loud, but it landed like a bomb in the middle of the room.

“The reported total is more than twenty-four million dollars, and it closely matches what your relatives say is missing.”
