My Sister Threw Away Her Fiancé Like Trash So I Married Him Instead Chapter 02

He said it like he meant it.

But his eyes stayed on my lips a beat too long before he finally looked away.

I stood there watching Samuel walk off, turning it over in my head. He’d been interested. I’d felt it. So why the sudden reversal?

“Hey. What are you lurking around here for?”

Aurora came around the corner with Theodore on her arm, both of them heading straight toward me. Her face was already twisted in disgust.

Theodore’s eyes, though — they stuck to me like glue. “And who’s this? She’s adorable.”

His gaze was practically undressing me. I took a step back. Aurora caught the look on his face, and something sharp and ugly flashed across hers, but she didn’t dare take it out on him.

She turned it on me instead. “Get back to work before I fire you. You want to die?”

I lowered my head and said nothing.

My mom was one of many women Harrison West had kept on the side. Her job was to give him a son. She’d only managed a daughter. Now she was sick, bedridden and broke, and Harrison wouldn’t pay a dime toward her treatment. It was Aurora who’d found out about me and brought me into the West household. She said it was out of kindness. Really, she wanted me nearby so she could remind me of my place every single day.

But I’d endured it.

Because the money Aurora paid me was keeping my mother alive.

Aurora saw my silence and got bolder. “You and that pathetic loser Samuel — you’re both like bad smells that won’t go away. Why don’t you both just drop dead?”

Normally I would’ve walked away. Let it go.

But then the golden text appeared.

[He said he had no interest and started to leave, then saw Aurora coming and deliberately hid around the corner.]

[Samuel’s paranoid as hell. He still thinks Willow’s playing some kind of angle.]

I flicked my eyes sideways. Sure enough, a dark fabric edge was visible in the shadow along the wall.

My heart lurched.

I turned around and looked Aurora dead in the face.

“Watch how you talk to people. Don’t you dare disrespect Samuel.”

Aurora blinked. Then her face went red. “Who do you think you are? You’re trash from a side piece, and you’re lecturing me?”

“Was I wrong? Samuel doesn’t owe anyone anything. You’re the one who broke the engagement. You’re the one who turned your back on him. This has always been on you.”

“Shut your mouth, you little—”

Aurora’s hand came flying at my face.

It stopped in midair.

Samuel had caught her wrist. His face was calm. His eyes weren’t.

Knew it. He’d been there the whole time.

Aurora recognized him and cycled through about five expressions in two seconds. Then she let out a bitter laugh. “Oh, I get it now. You two are together.”

“Willow, you really are just like your mother. Can’t help throwing yourself at men.”

She looked at Samuel, voice dripping venom. “Too bad the guy you went for just got kicked out with nothing. Can’t even keep the lights on. Suits you perfectly.”

Samuel’s eyes went cold.

I stepped in front of him without thinking. “In my eyes, he’s the best there is.”

Behind me, I felt Samuel’s gaze drop to my back.

Theodore had been watching the whole scene. He spoke up now with a lazy grin. “Fighting over a fraud? Really?”

His eyes slid to me, something calculating in them. “You’re the West girl, right? The secret one? Leave him and come with me. Staying with him is just choosing to suffer.”

Aurora’s jaw tightened, but the Aldrich family outranked the Wests, so she bit her tongue and shot me one murderous look.

“Slut,” she muttered under her breath.

Then she yanked Theodore away and they were gone.

Once they were out of sight, I exhaled slowly and turned around.

“You okay?” I kept my voice low. “Don’t listen to any of that.”

Samuel looked down at me for a moment.

Then he smiled.

It was slight, barely there, but it carried something watchful underneath.

“You really like me that much?”

I met his eyes without flinching.

Oh, I liked him, all right. I liked his money. I liked his power. I liked what he was going to do to the West family, what he was going to let me do to Aurora once it all came down.

But I let a soft flush creep onto my face, dropped my gaze, and gave a quiet little hm.

He reached out and wrapped his hand around my wrist again.

“Then come with me.”
