I cleared the dishes and went into the kitchen.

When I came back out, the door was wide open. Gabriel was gone.

On the table, there were several documents left behind.

He’d signed everything over to me-all his assets. The agreement took effect immediately.

Beside it lay a handwritten note. Just a few words.

[I’ll bear the consequences.]

I took it all. Without a second thought.

It was what Gabriel owed me. I deserved every bit of it.

The money in the account was more than enough to secure the rest of my life.

But I still stayed at the small studio, working, eating, and laughing with my colleagues as usual.

“Hey, has your ex stopped bothering you lately?” Jessie handed me a bubble tea.

I poked the straw in, took a sip, and said, “That’s ancient history.”

“I’ve been through a few since then. Who even thinks about that loser anymore?”

Everyone burst into laughter.

Jessie shot a glare at Tom, who was laughing the loudest.

“What? I’m just checking on Audrey,” she said.

“Maybe you should worry about yourself first,” Tom laughed.

“Didn’t your mom set you up with that bald guy? Got any photos? Let us see.”

Jessie couldn’t hold back her laughter either.

She pulled out her phone and shoved the photo right in front of his face.

“Scared you, didn’t I?”

“You old bachelor! Laugh all you want, you’ll laugh your hair right off!”

Then she turned to the mirror and posed dramatically.

“I don’t know what my mom’s freaking out about.”

“They say women really come into their own in their thirties. By forty, they stop caring what anyone else

thinks and just live for themselves.”

“So a goddess like me deserves the absolute best. Right?”

I smiled and chimed in, “Preach, Jessie.”

“Just kidding,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“I’m staying single. Loving myself-that’s what matters. Who needs to be tied down, anyway?”

“Learn a thing or two from our girl Audrey here.”

Out of nowhere, a horn sounded downstairs.

A young man was sitting on a motorcycle, helmet in hand, chin raised as he shouted up at the building.

“Hey, gorgeous!”

“Let’s go! Dinner time!”

Jessie stood up and looked down through the floor-to-ceiling window.

“Well, well,” she teased. “Audrey, another one for you?”

“How many is that now?”

Before she even finished speaking, I had already grabbed my bag and headed for the door.

Jessie turned to find me already smiling. “Go on, then. Live it up.”

“You know it,” I waved. “Bye!”

I ran out into the sunset and hopped onto the motorcycle behind him.

The wind rushed past my ears. The hem of his jacket fluttered, carrying a faint clean scent of soap.

I closed my eyes, the corners of my lips lifting slightly.

The truth is, no one really needs anyone else. We’re all complete on our own. I can do whatever I want.

My world has always been mine. And mine alone.
