I went to the airport and booked the next flight out. I didn’t even look at the destination.

In the end, I had cried until I had nothing left.

I finally saw things for what they were.

So I took my battered heart and went looking for someplace quiet—somewhere I could finally breathe.

On Lila’s birthday, Gabriel kept his promise and took her to the theater.

But his mind was somewhere else the entire time.

Every few minutes, he pulled out his phone and opened his chat with Audrey.

The last message still sat there from the day she left home.

For ten years, Audrey had contacted him every single day.

Sometimes she shared pictures of her meals. Sometimes, just a photo of a cloud.

But this time, two whole days had gone by. Not a single word.

“Gabriel. Gabriel?”

He snapped back to the present and looked at Lila. “What is it?”

“The play’s over.” she said.

“Oh.” He stood up. “Then let’s go. I’ll drive you home.”

Lila froze slightly. The smile on her face faded, but she followed him out anyway, soft as ever.

“Gabriel… there’s nobody home tonight…”

She bit her lip softly, cheeks flushed red.

But Gabriel barely reacted.

He just opened the passenger door, took out the gift he had prepared in advance, and handed it to her.

Then, casual as anything, he asked, “I’m getting married next week. Wanna come?”

“…Married?”

“Yeah. That girl I came with. The class reunion.”

Lila was quiet for a long moment.

Then, her voice strained, she asked, “Then… what about me?”

Gabriel chuckled lightly. “I’m getting married, not going to prison.”

“Come on. I’ll take you home.”

He only drove her as far as the entrance to her building and stopped.

If he went up and something actually happened, Audrey would probably have another meltdown over it.

On the way back, he tried to call Audrey again. Still nothing.

Gabriel didn’t think much of it and called Audrey’s mother instead.

“Mrs. Bennett, Audrey’s staying with you, right?”

There was a pause on the other end. “I guess so.”

“Just make sure she’s not late for the wedding. Day after tomorrow.”

“Alright.”

The wedding day arrived.

Gabriel sat in the wedding car wearing his suit. One arm rested casually against the window as he looked outside.

The groomsmen were milling around outside the hotel.

“What’s the holdup?” Gabriel got out of the car. “Room 806. I already told you.”

“Uh… Gabe…” one of them stammered. “No one in 806.”

Gabriel let out a laugh, assuming Audrey was still throwing a tantrum.

“Move. I’ll call her mom myself.”

The call went through after a couple of rings.

“Hi, Mrs. Bennett. Where should we meet Audrey?”

But instead, her mother asked him in confusion, “I didn’t found her. I thought you already picked her up.”

“Isn’t she with you?”

Gabriel’s expression suddenly stiffened.

His phone slipped from his hand and crashed onto the ground.
