My Roommate’s Dating Theory Killed Me, So Reborn I Let Her Go Chapter 04

The next few days were eerily peaceful.

Clara went to work every morning and spent every evening curled up on the couch reading web novels on her phone without speaking to me.

I had no interest in talking to her either.

Whenever we crossed paths coming or going, we acted as though the other didn’t exist.

To his credit, Mr. Potts came by every night around nine o’clock.

He checked the front door himself, made sure it was locked, and then left.

Meanwhile, the apartment building’s group chat gradually turned against me.

[That girl in 702, Vivian, is way too uptight. Clara’s such a sweet kid, and look how miserable she’s made her.]

Someone even tagged me directly.

[Stop making life so hard for a young girl.]

I didn’t respond to a single message.

On the fifth day, Mr. Potts called.

He’d found a replacement tenant, and the new renter would move in over the weekend.

By the sixth day, I finally relaxed.

I scheduled my move for Saturday morning.

Friday night, I packed all of my important documents and cash into a backpack and tucked it beneath my pillow.

My phone sat fully charged on the nightstand beside me.

Before going to sleep, I checked my bedroom lock one last time, making sure the deadbolt was fully engaged.

At two in the morning…

I woke up.

My bedroom door was slightly open.

Moonlight spilled through the narrow crack from the living room.

A wave of icy sweat instantly broke across my back.

That wasn’t possible.

I’d locked the door.

I’d replaced the lock.

There was only one key, and I’d hidden it beneath my pillow.

My hand shot underneath the pillow.

The key was gone.

Then I remembered.

Earlier that afternoon, I’d forgotten my jacket in the living room.

The key ring had been inside its pocket.

Clara had touched my jacket.

I held my breath and reached for my phone.

The screen had barely lit up before the bedroom door slowly swung wider.

A man wearing a black baseball cap slipped sideways through the opening.

A folding knife gleamed in his hand.

When he saw I was awake, he paused for a second before grinning.

“Well… looks like you’re awake.”

I tightened my grip on my phone, blindly tapping the screen with my thumb.

The scar on my throat from my previous life seemed to ache all over again.

“Where’s the money?” he asked, lifting the knife toward me.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“My backpack is under the pillow. There’s thirteen thousand dollars in cash inside. My laptop’s in the desk drawer.”

“You can take everything.”

He walked over and searched the bag.

His hands moved with practiced speed as he counted the cash before stuffing it into his pockets.

Then he opened the desk drawer, grabbed my laptop, and tucked it under his arm.

Everything had gone so smoothly that he let his guard down.

Just as he turned toward the bedroom door…

My phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

Caller ID: Clara.

He looked at me with a chilling smile.

“Answer it.”

“Speakerphone.”

I answered.

Clara’s excited voice immediately came through.

“Hello? Did a guy make it into your room?”

My face went cold.

“You did this?”

“Have you completely lost your mind?”

Instead of answering me, she deliberately raised her voice so the intruder could hear.

“Hey, handsome! My roommate’s actually pretty cute. She’s got a great body too!”

“Don’t be picky! She keeps making fun of me for believing in fate. Tonight, let her experience what destiny feels like!”

The man blinked before letting out a laugh.

“Your roommate’s pretty generous.”

I stared at the phone, my hands shaking.

“Clara…”

“You unlocked my door so a home invader could rape me?”

Silence lingered for two seconds.

Then Clara answered as if she’d done nothing wrong.

“Vivian, stop acting so ungrateful!”

“I was saving my perfect romantic encounter for myself, but you’ve been picking on me all week.”

“So I decided to give you the opportunity instead.”

“You should be thanking me.”

The man burst into laughter.

He slipped my phone into his pocket and started walking back toward me.

“If your roommate’s giving me permission…”

“It’d be rude not to take advantage of the opportunity.”

At last, my thumb found the emergency call button.

The instant the line connected, I screamed at the top of my lungs.

“742 Evergreen Avenue, Apartment 702!”

“Home invasion!”

“Please help!”

His face changed instantly.

He lunged at me, trying to snatch the phone away.

I rolled off the bed, dragging the comforter with me like a shield.

He caught my ankle and yanked me back across the floor.

My knee slammed hard into the bed frame.

Pain exploded through my leg.

“You bitch!” he roared.

“You actually called the cops?”

“I was going to let you live!”

“Now you’re asking to die!”

Just like before…

The knife pressed against my throat.

The blade sliced a thin line across my skin.

I fought with everything I had.

But my strength was nothing compared to a grown man’s.

My arms were already going numb.

Was history really going to repeat itself?
