I knew Sloane was petty. I didn’t know she was dangerous.

The stall was tiny. So small that Alistair and I were pressed tightly together.

His chin rested on top of my head.

I’d always liked small, enclosed spaces. Being in one with him made me feel safe in a way I couldn’t explain.

Sloane was still talking on the phone.

Something shifted in the air between us. I looked up.

His face had gone completely cold. But it wasn’t aimed at me.

Sloane’s words had enraged him.

His eyes were pitch-black, and looking into them made me shiver.

My forehead bumped his nose. A soft touch.

Outside, Sloane paused.

“Hold on,” she said into the phone.

She started walking toward the stall.

My heart rose into my throat. If she opened that door, she’d know we’d heard everything. That would tip her

off.

Alistair tightened his arms around me.

She didn’t open it. Maybe she second-guessed herself. Either way, she backed off.

On her way out, her voice picked up again. “Remember when I invited Alistair to that hotel three months ago?

He actually…”

The powder room door closed behind her. Her voice cut out.

Alistair didn’t let go.

I thought about what she’d almost finished saying.

This was my chance. “Alistair. Did you go to that hotel three months ago?”

“I always knew it was you. The whole time.” His voice was quiet. “When the hotel invite came, I thought it was

from you.”

“But when I got there, Sloane answered the door. I left.”

Alistair had known it was me all along.

I pressed closer without meaning to. “But the next morning, she had a hickey on her neck…

“I didn’t touch her. I’ve barely spoken two words to her.”

“That night, I came home and slept in your bed.”

“I’ve never been with anyone. Everything I am is yours.”

The comments had said he’d slept in my room once.

So that had been the night.

Every doubt I’d carried for three months dissolved.

We looked at each other. And this time, neither of us looked away.

His voice came out rough. “Baby. I want to kiss you.”

I wanted to kiss him too.

I nodded and closed my eyes…

A long time later, the moment finally ended.

We stepped out of the stall. We’d been kissing in there until we completely lost track of time.

I could barely breathe. It was the best moment of my life.

We both liked it: the closeness, the smallness of the space, just the two of us.

The world outside disappeared. All I could hear was his heartbeat against mine.

Like we were the only two people left.
