My Mom Hid Gold In Her Truffle Box Chapter 11

My Mom Hid Gold In Her Truffle Box Chapter 11

“Dad, you don’t get to call it the past and make it disappear.”

“You watched her take everything from me. You chose her over me every single time. This is where that leads.”

“You enabled it. Now you live with it.”

On the other end, Dad’s breathing turned ragged. I could hear him trying not to cry.

“Eleanor, I’m sorry. I failed you.”

The apology weighed nothing. Somehow, it still left a bruise.

I didn’t answer.

No apology could undo what had already been done. The girl who used to believe in this family was gone.

“I won’t be visiting Mom.”

“When the time comes, I’ll cover my share of your basic care. I’ll do the bare minimum.”

“But that’s all. Nothing more.”

“Beyond that, don’t call me. Don’t come looking for me. We’re done.”

Dad started to say something else. I hung up.

Over the next few days, my aunt called. Then my uncle. They all had the same speech.

“Eleanor, just swallow your pride. Your mother’s in the hospital. Is it really that hard to be the bigger person?”

“You’ve got a good life. Why hold on to all this bitterness? You have to move forward.”

“Chloe doesn’t know any better. You’re the responsible one. You always have been. There’s nothing in a family that can’t be worked out.”

I didn’t argue. I said no, politely, firmly, every single time. Anyone who wouldn’t stop pushing got blocked.

Eventually, the calls stopped. The silence settled in.

I didn’t check on Mom after she left the hospital. I didn’t follow up on whatever Chloe did next.

However they were living now, it wasn’t my story anymore.
