I’d been living under the radar. Charles and his pack weren’t the only ones who thought I was dead

Everyone did.

For a week straight. Word spread online about me showing up at my mother’s birthday.

The same people who’d called for my head seven years ago aimed their pitchforks at me again.

Someone leaked my address. Red paint on my door. Dead cats on my step.

It happened fast.

Reporters camped outside my apartment. The second I opened the door, cameras were in my face.

The questions came sharp and fast.

“You never responded to the cheating allegations seven years ago. Did you scar your face on purpose to

hide?”

I slammed the door. They kept shouting through the wood.

Landon looked at me. Worried. “You okay?”

I shook my head and patted his hand.

“It’s fine. We’re moving in two days.”

I called the cops. The noise outside died down eventually.

In the crowd, I spotted a face. The same reporter who’d led the mob against me seven years ago.

Iris. It had to be her.

Sure enough. My phone buzzed with an anonymous text. [Do you like my gift? Nova.]

My fists clenched.

That snake.

Another message popped up.

[I saw the news. Nova. Just say the word and I’ll help.]

Charles. Of course.

When I’d begged him for help before, he’d ripped his hand away without a second thought.

Now that I didn’t need it, he wanted to play hero.

I blocked them both.

But the calls didn’t stop. All afternoon.

Landon waved his hand in front of my face.

“Maybe it’s important. Don’t you want to clear things up?”

He was right. Some things needed to be said.

Knowing Charles, he’d just keep calling from different numbers if I ignored him.

So I picked up. His voice rushed through. Relieved.

“You finally answered.”

“Say what you need to say.” My voice was flat.

“What I did back then was wrong. I can help you prove it.”

“Let me make it up to you. After that fire, I’ve been losing my mind. Every night.”

“Just give me a chance. Please.”

I let out a cold breath. “And what’s the price?”

I knew him too well.

Silence. Then he ground the words out.

“Leave Landon.”
