My Mafia Husband Faked Amnesia For Three Years, Now He Regrets It Chapter 02

By the time snow had piled up along the curbs, they finally came out of the restaurant.

Matteo walked with his hand in Clara’s, looking docile, not a trace of impatience on his face.

I opened the car door and gestured for him to get in.

He flinched back like I’d scared him, ducking behind Clara, then suddenly raised his voice.

“Not her! I want Clara! Clara gets in first! We go home together!”

The childish, volatile performance matched the doctor’s description to the letter.

But I already knew it was a rehearsal.

Clara gave a soft laugh.

“Alessia, Matteo can’t be away from me right now. You don’t want him to throw a tantrum like a child if I leave him, do you?”

A drunk family member stumbled over and slapped a hand on my shoulder.

“Your place is big enough. One more person will be okay. You’re just a wife from an alliance marriage. You should think more about the Contes’ heir. Isn’t that right, sweetheart?”

I slapped his hand off coldly.

A flash of something brutal flickered across Matteo’s eyes.

That was the primal murderous instinct of a mafia boss watching someone dishonor his wife.

But the next second, he just clenched his fist and kept up the act.

“Fine.” I looked at Clara. “Move in.”

Matteo blinked, caught off guard.

He probably hadn’t expected me to agree so easily.

Back at the house, I pointed to the guest room at the end of the hall. “The housekeeper’s already set it up. You’ll stay here.”

Matteo grabbed Clara’s sleeve and pressed himself against her.

“No. I want Clara to sleep with me. She can’t leave.”

He started kicking the decorative cabinet by the wall, throwing a fit like a kid who’d been told he couldn’t have a toy.

Clara’s ears went pink. She dropped her gaze.

“If being apart triggers his episodes, I’ll stay with him tonight. I don’t want to upset him.”

I watched Matteo quietly.

“He wakes up scared in the middle of the night. He checks the closets and the safe over and over, convinced someone’s stolen the family ledgers. Sometimes a black tie sets him off, and he’ll smash everything in the room. You sure about that?”

Clara hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded anyway.

“It’s fine. I’m a professional.”

I didn’t push it.

“I’ll go pack my things.”

I walked into the master bedroom we’d shared for three years.

Ever since Matteo got “sick,” my perfume, my gowns, my jewelry would send him into a fit. He said they reminded him of the accident.

I was so afraid of triggering him that I’d made myself practically a shadow in that room.

The closet held only a few plain-colored outfits.

On the vanity, a single dark blue jewelry box.

Clara followed me in, her eyes landing on it immediately.

“What’s inside?”

I clutched it instinctively.

It was a blue diamond necklace. Matteo had given it to me on my twenty-sixth birthday.

After we married, every time he had an “episode,” he’d try to smash it.

But I could never bring myself to throw it away.

Whenever I felt like I was about to break, I’d think back to when I was sixteen, Matteo holding my hand on the Sicilian coast, telling me one day he’d cross the Atlantic to marry me.

“Just a birthday gift from a long time ago.”

Clara opened the lid, her eyes lighting up.

“Could I have it? I really love it.”

I was about to say no when Matteo reached out and grabbed for it.

The second he saw the blue diamond, something set him off. He went wild.

“Clara’s! This is Clara’s!”

He yanked on the chain, his eyes terrifyingly clear.

I stared at him for a few seconds, then let go, finger by finger.

“Take it.”

Clara beamed and fastened it around her neck.

“Thank you.”

I dragged my suitcase to the guest room.

That night, there was no Matteo smashing things on purpose, no screaming, no calling me by the wrong name over and over.

And still, I didn’t sleep a wink.

Moonlight fell on the plain gold band on my ring finger.

He’d once promised me the most dazzling diamond, a wedding at St. Patrick’s that the whole city would know about.

But when we actually married, we just signed papers at City Hall.

He said the family was in the middle of a dangerous power transition, so our wedding couldn’t be flashy.

I understood. Again and again.

Now I realize he just didn’t want anyone to know he’d married me.

I slipped the ring off and set it on the nightstand.

If he’d rather fake an illness than keep Clara out of our marriage, then forget me for good.

The next morning, I ate breakfast alone.

Matteo and Clara didn’t come out of the master bedroom until almost noon.

I picked up my coffee to leave when my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Giulia. Matteo’s mother.

[Alessia, come to Oheka Castle tonight at six with Matteo.]

[Aldo and I miss him.]
