My Made‑Up Werewolf Mate Sent Me Gifts Chapter 05

My Made‑Up Werewolf Mate Sent Me Gifts Chapter 05: The Pale

After I said that, everyone was silent for one second.

Then the whole room burst into deafening laughter.

“Vee, what kind of nonsense are you talking about?”

“What a waste. I thought you were going to reveal some earth-shattering secret.”

My coworkers laughed together. Some shook their heads. Some rolled their eyes.

Jenna patted my shoulder.

“Vee, are you under too much stress lately? Maybe take a few days off?”

I shook my head.

“I’m very clearheaded. I already told you none of you would be able to accept this.”

A coworker laughed.

“Vee, are you serious? You mean we’re all ghosts? Ghosts have jobs now? That’s even worse than dying.”

Another wave of laughter broke out.

Mara stepped toward me.

“Vee, I will write down every word you say. If there is an issue with your mental state, I can help contact a

doctor. But if you are deliberately disrupting the investigation…”

I cut her off.

“Officer Mara, I am not disrupting the investigation. Every word I say is true. I can swear it. Don’t you really

find it strange? You’re almost thirty, and you don’t have even one close friend. Aren’t you curious?”

Her eyes flickered.

“I’ll say this again. None of this has anything to do with your case.”

“Officer Mara, you don’t have parents either because you’re already dead. Same as me.”

Someone laughed quietly.

The laugh quickly spread.

“I think Vee really has some kind of problem. Officer, you should take her away. She must have done something illegal and is raving to waste time.”

I could tell Mara was trying to stay patient.

“Vee,” she said, “I’m giving you one last chance. Will you cooperate with the investigation or not?”

“I am cooperating. I’m telling you the truth.”

“You call that the truth?” Her voice finally rose. “You said we’re all dead. Can you say that out loud and not

hear how ridiculous it sounds?”

I opened my mouth, wanting to argue, but I did not know where to begin.

At that moment, a voice sounded behind me.

“Um… I have something to say.”

Everyone turned.

The speaker was Eli.

“Eli, why are you joining this mess?”

“No.” Eli lifted his head, his voice trembling. “When I thought about my parents just now, my head hurt. Then…

I seemed to remember something.”

Jenna asked, “What did you remember?”

He held his head, as if it was hard to say.

I asked him, “Eli, do you remember how you came to this company?”

He froze.

Then he frowned, trying hard to recall.

“I think I submitted my resume, interviewed, then got hired… No…”

His voice suddenly changed.

“I didn’t submit a resume. I didn’t interview.”

Then he said something that stunned everyone.

“I remember dying. I had a serious illness. I was treated for a long time, but it didn’t work. Then I came here.”

“Eli, why are you talking crazy too?”

Eli shook his head and repeated, “I remember dying.”

Mara stared at Eli for several seconds, then turned to look at me.

Her expression was complicated, as if she was deciding whether we were putting on an act together.

I sighed.

“I know this sounds beyond belief, but it is the truth. Eli came here late, so his memory hasn’t been fully

erased.”

I turned and met Mara’s eyes.

“Officer Mara, have you ever had strange dreams? For example, dreaming that something bit through your throat?”

Her body tensed sharply.

“You have, haven’t you?” I took one step forward. “You dreamed you were wearing a police uniform, chasing someone. Then a gray wolf lunged at you. You looked down and saw your neck covered in blood. And you had that dream more than once.”

With every sentence, her face darkened further.

I knew I was right.

Her voice was hoarse.

“How do you know that?”

“Because this really is another world. After people die, they come here for a transition period. They live like the living before truly leaving.”

Mara’s reaction made everyone grow serious.

“How did I die?” she asked.

I told her, “You were assisting the Hunter’s Guild in arresting a rogue wolf. Your carotid artery was torn open.

I saw it in a news report in the real world. Your last name, Voss, was unusual, so I looked twice and remembered your face.”

That was when everything had come back to me.

I had been killed by a silver dagger.

After death, I arrived in The Pale.

The Moon Goddess, who governed this place, said the werewolf death rate was too high now.

The reincarnation passage was too crowded, and too many souls were trapped in the Moonfield with no rest.

So she created a world like this, letting werewolves transition here after death.

When the Moonfield had space, the “people” here would truly go on to the Moonfield.

“Now do you understand?” I looked at everyone. “Why do so many of us have no parents and no friends? Because they are still alive. After we died, we came to this world and stayed with other dead people. Our parents and friends are in another world. We can’t see them or contact them.”

“So…” Eli seemed calmer than before. “I really am dead. I remember some of it, but not much. Just like you

said, my memory is being erased.”

I nodded.

“You came here latest, so you remember the most.”

The office went quiet again.

Then someone laughed.

It was Linda from finance, the least superstitious person in the office.

She waved her hand.

“Enough, enough. Vee, are you done making a scene today? First the dead, then the Moon Goddess. What,

are you the Moon Goddess’s messenger now?”

Some people laughed along, but the laughter was scattered.

Not as natural as before.

“Linda is right,” another coworker said. “I feel perfectly fine. I eat well and sleep well. How could I be dead?”

“Because we slowly forget,” I said. “You forget you had parents. You forget you had friends. You forget how you died. You start feeling as if you were always like this, as if everything is completely normal.”

I paused.

“I was the same. I forgot my parents, my friends, and my Mate.”

A familiar, aged voice came from behind me, and my soul trembled.

“Is your mate him?”
