My Lawyer Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for a Pregnant Fraud Chapter 07

Caspian stormed through the front door of the Finch-Lowell residence, gasping as if he’d sprinted the entire way from the office.

I’d just gotten off the phone with Sage.

She’d told me everything. The confrontation. The fallout. And she’d apologized for telling him.

“I’m sorry. I was just so angry. I told him you’re pregnant.”

I’d smiled into the phone. “It’s fine. That was never going to stay buried anyway.”

If Caspian didn’t find out today, he’d find out tomorrow.

I still hadn’t changed the door code.

So when the door flew open, I remained seated on the couch. Calm. Waiting.

He crossed the room, his eyes bloodshot. His face was gaunt with distress.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked at him. At the tears threatening to spill. Something deep in my chest lurched.

Tell him?

How exactly was I supposed to do that?

Walk up and say I’m pregnant too, so you need to force Camila to have an abortion and marry me instead?

That wasn’t how I envisioned this.

“Caspian. Do you remember the first divorce case we ever watched together?”

We’d still been students. Our advisor took us to sit in on a trial.

The husband had cheated and was suing his wife for divorce.

A standard case. Had the wife sought damages, the court likely would have ruled in her favor.

But this woman refused.

Her husband offered her a fortune. She refused.

Her answer never changed. She would not agree to end the marriage.

The court ruled against dissolution. The marriage continued.

The wife let out a breath. She looked genuinely relieved.

Caspian sat beside me, watching her with something bordering on pity.

“Her husband clearly doesn’t want to be with her anymore. What’s the point of prolonging a marriage like

that?”

I’d asked him, turning to face him, “What if you were the one who betrayed your wife someday, but the judge

refused to grant the divorce? What would you do?”

He shook his head. “I wouldn’t have a choice. She’d still be my wife. But my heart wouldn’t be in it.”

Now here we were.

Same case. Same impossible equation.

I was that woman. I didn’t want my husband to leave.

Yet I had no way of knowing what he truly wanted.

As he’d said back then.

The court forced them to remain bound. If I told him I was pregnant. If he stayed-how would I ever know if it

was love or obligation?

“Lowell. That man stayed with his wife against his will. He moved his mistress into the house. His wife never

uttered a word of protest. She just swallowed it all. Year after year. She’s been a ghost ever since.”

“I didn’t tell you about the baby because I was terrified you’d make a decision you didn’t truly want. And then

you’d resent me for it.”

“I needed whatever choice you made to be authentic. Truly yours.”

“And I made my choice too. I chose to leave.”

Caspian reached out. Slowly. Carefully. His hand hovered above my stomach as if it were made of glass.

“So there really is a baby. Our baby.”

The way he said it shattered something inside me.

We used to wander through Pottery Barn Kids and mock each other’s tastes. Arguing over tiny outfits. Vowing to dress our child exactly as we pleased.

Memories like that. They cut deep.

I kept my voice level. “Yes. But I’m not keeping it.”

Caspian’s face went still.

“Marlowe. You still don’t believe me. You still think I actually slept with her.”

I looked at him. Disappointment lumped in my throat.

“After everything that’s happened-you really think I’m leaving because she’s pregnant?”
