At those words, I began to tremble uncontrollably. 

No wonder everything had felt so chaotic around me. 

No wonder I’d heard a thousand voices in my ears.

My father took over the story.

As he recalled the scene, my usually steady father’s voice 

shook, his face ashen. 

It all clicked for me. 

No wonder I’d heard the words “emergency treatment” and 

those frantic, chaotic shouts. 

All the severe bleeding, resuscitation and respiratory arrest 

had been about her. 

My father sighed. 

“Only after the woman was pronounced dead did Andrew completely lose his mind. He clung to her body, holding her so tightly no one could pull him away.” 

“In the end, other doctors had to sedate him by force to get the situation under control.” 

I pressed eagerly, “Then what? How did Andrew die?” 

My mother closed her eyes, her face contorted in pain. 

“When the sedative wore off, Andrew woke up. He secretly took the woman’s body with him. 

For three whole days, we couldn’t find them.” 

“On the morning of the fourth day, the police found Andrew’s car by a lake in the suburbs. And two bodies.” 

“Andrew had jumped into the lake, holding that woman in his arms.” 

My mother finally broke down, sobbing loudly. 

“When they pulled them out, Andrew was still holding her so tightly, they couldn’t separate them…” 

I collapsed to the ground, my mind completely blank. 

So that was it. The ending was indeed fated. 

But it was different from what I’d expected. 

I looked at my parents and asked, “Did you go to see that woman? Otherwise, why would she suddenly do something. like that, and say those strange words?” 

My parents exchanged a glance and shook their heads in unison, confused. “No.” 

My mother looked at me, her heart aching. 

“Even though we grieved for what you’d been through, we 

knew the ending was fated, that it couldn’t be changed. So we 

gave up.” 

Then why? 

By all rights, that woman should have gone abroad with Andrew and his mother, given birth happily, and recovered 

from childbirth. 

As I stood there, confused, I suddenly remembered the 

moment our eyes had met.
