My Husband’s Other Wife Was My Maid of Honor Chapter 10

My Husband’s Other Wife Was My Maid of Honor Chapter 10 – Poppy Chapter 10 – Poppy

Mara walked in.

She walked the length of that ballroom in a black dress with a three-year-old on her hip, and four hundred people turned in their chairs to watch her do it, and I have never in my life seen anyone so brave.

She stopped ten feet from the stage.

Poppy lifted her head, scanned the room the way small children do, and found the one face she knew.

“Daddy!” she shrieked, delighted, and reached both arms toward table two.

I have replayed that moment a thousand times. Not for the drama. For the sound the room made – this collective, involuntary intake, four hundred lungs at once. And for Grant’s face.

He didn’t reach back. That’s what I’ll never forgive on that child’s behalf.

He put his hands up like she was a bee, and he said, out loud, in front of everyone, “That’s not – I don’t –

she’s confused.”

Poppy’s face crumpled.

Mara said, into the silence, in a voice that carried: “She’s not confused, Grant. Tell them her middle name.”

He didn’t.

“It’s Diane,” Mara said, and turned to look at table four, where his mother sat frozen with a fork in her hand.

“After Nana.”

That was the moment the room turned. I watched it happen. Up until then, some of them had been ready to pity him a little – men in that room have done versions of this and gotten away with it. But watching a man. deny a crying toddler in public, and watching his mother not stand up-

Doug Bright leaned into the microphone and said, “This event is concluded. Thank you all for coming.”

Chaos, then. Chairs. Phones – so many phones, a hundred of them up, which is how it ended up online by midnight and how a woman in a red dress on a stage got nine million views by Tuesday.

Grant came at me through the crowd. Not violent. Worse – pleading. He grabbed my hands and there were actual tears on his face and he said, “Nora. Nora, baby, listen to me. It’s not what you think, I was going to tell you, I’ve been trying to end it for years, she trapped me, please, please, I only ever loved you-”

And behind him, ten feet away, Mara heard every word.

“Say that again,” I said.

only ever loved you. It was always you. She was-” he lowered his voice, “she was a mistake, Nor, she means nothing-

I stepped to the side so he could see her standing there with his daughter.

He looked at Mara.

And then this is the truest thing I know about my husband he turned back to me and said, “Nora, don’t do

this in front of people.”

Not don’t do this to her. Not let me explain.

Don’t do this in front of people.

That was always the only sin. Not the lying, not the forging, not the two women or the child or my grandmother’s house. Getting seen.

Two deputies had come in through the service door about ninety seconds earlier. Renata had told me they’d probably wait until Monday, do it quietly at his office, but somebody in the back had called 911 during the speech and the deputies who arrived had a copy of an active warrant out of Ridgefield County for forgery and criminal simulation, because the notary had folded on Thursday afternoon.

They took him in the coat check hallway. No sirens, no drama. He kept saying my name.

Diane Whitaker sat at table four the entire time and did not get up.

Cassie found me by the doors. Mascara everywhere. “Nora Nora, I swear to God, we tried to-”

“You had six years,” I said.

“I was going to tell you a hundred times-”

“You had six years, Cassie.”

I walked out. Mara came with me. Poppy fell asleep against her mother’s shoulder in the elevator, which is

the only mercy in this entire story.

In the parking garage, Mara said, “What now?”

I looked at the two of us. Two women in cocktail dresses in a concrete garage, one pregnant, one holding a folder, both of us wearing the same man’s mistakes.

“Now,” I said, “we get very good lawyers.”
