My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 31

Boston.

I was lying in bed, watching Claire sleep peacefully in her crib.

Looking at her rosy little face, I knew that every ounce of suffering had been worth it.

If I had any regrets, it was only one.

That I couldn’t give her a complete family.

“Amelia, come on. Drink this seafood chowder.”

My mother had been relentlessly trying to nourish me since I’d come home.

In just two weeks, the color had started to return to my cheeks.

“Mom, I told you, you don’t have to make me midnight snacks. I’m not hungry.”

“Silly girl.” My mother set the bowl on the nightstand. “If you don’t eat, how will you have the strength to take care of Claire?”

Just then, a soft cry came from the crib.

I started to get up, but my mother was already there, lifting the baby.

“Don’t you move. The doctor said you need to avoid heavy lifting, or your back will ache for the rest of your life.”

I smiled.

“She’s my daughter, Mom. Of course I want to hold her when she cries.”

“And you’re my daughter.” My mother turned to look at me, her eyes gentle and full of a pain that mirrored my own. “And I ache for you.”

Her words made my eyes sting.
