My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 09

My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 09

“Ah— It hurts!”

I clutched the doctor’s arm, my voice a desperate plea.

“Please, save my child. She’s been with me for eight months. I want her to live. Stop calling him. Just take me to surgery. I’ll take full responsibility!”

After that, the darkness finally took me.

Just before my consciousness snapped, I remembered Carter’s cold words on the polo field.

“If the child is really gone, she brought it on herself.”

With that one sentence, he had forfeited the right to be her father.

I don’t know how much time had passed when I drifted back toward the surface.

I was surrounded by voices, distant and muffled, as if I were underwater.

“Quick, her water has broken. The baby’s heartbeat is faint. Prep for surgery immediately!”

“Isn’t this Mrs. Beauchamp? Where is Carter Beauchamp?”

“The Carter Beauchamp? I just saw a Vanity Fair alert. He’s hosting a party tonight to announce his heir.”

“What party? His wife is in here fighting for her life, and the baby is on its way!”

“It must be for that son his mistress had. I heard he was born in this hospital, too. What a mess.”

“And he calls himself a husband? He came with her to every single prenatal appointment. I thought he adored her. Turns out it was all an act.”

Amid the chaos, a gentle voice spoke near my ear, full of indignation and encouragement.

“Miss Lowell, hang in there. The baby will be out soon.”

Miss Lowell.

That was my name.

Not Beauchamp.

When I opened my eyes again, the surgical lights were blinding.

A doctor in scrubs stood beside me, holding a tiny baby wrapped in a blanket.

“Congratulations, Miss Lowell.” Her face was etched with fatigue, but her smile was genuine. “You have a daughter. She’s healthy, and she’s beautiful.”

Weakly, I turned my head to look at that tiny life.

She was wrinkled and red, but one look was all it took to steal my heart.

“Oh, right,” the doctor said. “A lawyer from Boston called for you earlier. I took the call. He said he’d be waiting outside. He asked me to give you this.”

She handed me a thick kraft paper envelope.

I didn’t reach for my daughter. Not yet. I took the envelope first.

I tore it open, and the documents inside slid out.

The title on the top page was stark and clear.

FINAL JUDGMENT OF DIVORCE

At the bottom were the judge’s signature and the official court seal.

Seeing that decree, I finally broke.

Tears fell, one by one, onto the sterile white bedsheet.

The doctor hurried to my side. “You just gave birth. You mustn’t cry. It’s bad for your recovery.”

I nodded and wiped the tears away.

She was right.

I wouldn’t cry anymore.

Not for Carter Beauchamp. Not for this rotten marriage. This was the last time.

Never again.

I looked up at the doctor. My throat was raw, but my voice was steady.

“Doctor, could I ask my lawyer to help me with one more thing?”

At that same moment, the heir-announcement party at the Beauchamp estate was in full swing.

Music floated over the manicured lawn, and a champagne tower glittered under the crystal lights. The cream of Charleston society had turned out, raising their glasses to congratulate Carter Beauchamp.

“Congratulations, man. The Beauchamp line is finally secure.”

“Carter, on a day like this, where’s Amelia? Don’t tell me she still can’t accept Savannah. Those Northern women, always so emotional.”

Carter smiled and nodded, but he was drinking one glass after another.

An inexplicable unease had settled in his chest.

It felt as if something precious was slipping further and further away.

The main event was about to begin, and he still hadn’t seen Amelia.

He assumed she was furious, holed up in her room.

He even felt a flash of irritation. Why did she always have to be so uncooperative at moments like this?

Savannah, holding her sleeping son, urged him softly, “Darling, everyone’s waiting for us to go on stage. Amelia probably isn’t coming. Let’s just forget about her.”

Carter instinctively reached for his phone, intending to call Amelia.

Only then did he realize it was off.

He frowned and held the power button. Savannah reached out to stop him.

“Can’t we go on first? Don’t keep the guests waiting.”

Carter ignored her.

The moment the phone screen lit up, it was flooded with missed calls and messages. Almost all of them were from old James.

Carter’s heart plummeted.

He immediately called back.

The call was answered on the first ring.

“James! Why were you calling me all night? Where is Amelia? Get her down here. Don’t make me—”

James’s voice on the other end was hollow, as if all the life had been drained from him.

“Sir, Madam hemorrhaged after the polo match last night. I took her to the hospital.”

“The doctors were with her all night.”

Carter went rigid.

“And…” James paused, his voice flat. “A few minutes ago, Madam gave birth to your daughter.”

Daughter.

Carter stood frozen, his mind a complete blank.

At that exact moment, a uniformed court courier threaded through the crowd and walked straight toward him.
