My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 07

I ignored her.

Lowering my head, I placed a hand on my swollen belly and continued my one-sided conversation.

“When we get back to Boston, Mommy will take you for walks along the Charles River.”

My refusal to engage clearly infuriated her.

She snatched the hardcover program from my hands—a special booklet for the charity match, detailing the Beauchamp family history and the day’s events.

“Boston?” she shrieked. “Someone with Beauchamp blood will never belong in a place like that. You have no right to this. And neither does that thing in your belly.”

That crossed a line.

I looked up at her, my voice turning to ice.

“Give it back.”

“No.” She clutched the baby with one arm, holding the booklet high with the other, her face a mask of provocation. “What are you going to do about it?”

Just as I stepped forward to take it from her, her gaze flickered past me, toward the far end of the lawn.

Carter and several family elders were walking our way.

A sly smile curved Savannah’s lips.

The next second, still holding the child, she threw herself backward with a dramatic scream.

“Amelia! No! What are you doing to my son?”

I froze, the accusation so sudden I couldn’t react. She was already crying, her voice full of theatrical tears.

“I know you hate me, but the child is innocent! He is the only hope for the Beauchamp family! How could you—”

“Amelia!”

Carter rushed over and grabbed my wrist.

His grip was so tight I winced in pain.

“What did you do?”

“Carter, I’m so scared…” Savannah whimpered, hiding behind him, her shoulders shaking with sobs. “I was just trying to tell her not to hold out hope, and she… she said she would destroy the Beauchamp family’s future and take my child away…”

“Did you say that?” Carter stared at me, his eyes filled with disgust. “I thought you agreed to the divorce because you wanted to handle this like an adult. I can’t believe you’re still pulling these stunts. Amelia, what has happened to you?”

“I didn’t!” I shook my head, my wrist and my heart aching in unison. “She’s acting! She dropped the cradle herself. She’s always acting! Can’t you see it?”

“She would never gamble with our son’s safety!” Carter yelled back. “Why would Savannah use our only heir to frame you?”

He looked at me as if I were something vile he’d scraped off his shoe.

“You’re pregnant, too. Aren’t you afraid of divine retribution?”

The taste of blood rose in my throat.

He would even say something like that. For her.

I looked at him, a terrible smile forming on my lips.

“A woman who can use her own family’s legacy as a prop in her performance? What’s one more act to her?”

“Enough! Shut up!”

Those words seemed to be the final spark.

As if to prove to the elders that he was protecting the precious “heir,” he raised his hand and shoved me. Hard.

I was completely unprepared.

At eight months pregnant, my center of gravity was already gone. I stumbled backward, lost my footing, and fell heavily onto the manicured grass.

A collective gasp went through the onlookers.

A violent, tearing pain ripped through my lower abdomen. It felt like everything inside me was sinking.

I curled into myself, a warm gush of liquid spreading down my legs.

I was wearing a white linen dress.

In seconds, a horrifying bloom of bright red blood soaked the hem.

Carter just stood there, motionless.

He looked down at me, his voice terrifyingly cold.

“Stop pretending, Amelia. This isn’t the time for one of your performances.”

He glanced at the blood spreading beneath me, then at my face, pale with agony.

And then he said the words I will never forget.

“It’s only a daughter.”

Whispers erupted from the crowd around us.

Carter raised a hand and summoned security, his tone clipped, as if dealing with an unsightly piece of trash.

“Take Madam back to her room. Don’t let her out here again. We don’t want to spoil the guests’ mood.”

The guards saw the blood on my skirt and hesitated.

Just then, Savannah sidled closer and said, in a voice just loud enough for everyone to hear, “Carter, maybe we should let it go… Amelia is still pregnant. What if something really happens to the baby?”
