Three months later, Julian and I finished the Thornvine cure.

Summer was the first to test it. She got the injection. The others in the support group also made appointments to receive it.

I had only been pricked once, so a tiny dose was enough to completely neutralize the Thornvine’s effects in my body.

When Hunter learned I was going to get the injection, he was fully supportive. He waited outside the lab for me. “Stella, these past three months have meant everything to me. Thank you.”

I smiled. “Are you afraid I’m going to go back to how I used to be?”

He ran his hand over my hair, full of affection. “I’m not afraid. No matter how you change, I’ll still love you.”

“Okay. I’m going in.” I hadn’t told him yet.

Even after the injection, I wouldn’t go back to being as cold as I once was. Hunter had unlocked something inside me.

Some things can be addictive. And I was addicted to Hunter.

On the weekend, Hunter and I went to the Cole Family Estate for dinner. Harold couldn’t stop smiling when he saw us walk in holding hands.

While Hunter went to the wine cellar, Harold said to me, “Stella, when your father and Hunter’s father arranged your engagement, Hunter was against it.”

My stomach tightened.

“He said if he was going to be with someone, he wanted to find her himself. He didn’t want a family arrangement.”

“But your father said you were cold by nature. If Hunter had to chase you, it would take years. So Hunter finally agreed to the arrangement.”

“After your father passed away, Hunter wanted to postpone the wedding. He wanted to date you first, let you fall in love with him, and then get married. I said no.”

“I said you could fall in love just as easily after you were married. Looking at you now, I think I made the right decision.”

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. So Hunter hadn’t married me to repay a debt at all.

After dinner, we drove to The Ridge. In the car, I asked him, “When did you first fall in love with me, Hunter?”

His voice was full of emotion. “Do you remember your eighteenth birthday?”

“My parents took me to your party. You were in your garden, pruning flowers. I stood behind you and watched you for a long time. I knew then.”

That night, in the bungalow at The Ridge, Hunter pulled the window shut.

The insects outside sang their nightly song, over and over. He kissed my forehead and whispered, “Tell me if you’re uncomfortable. Don’t worry about me.”

Why would I be uncomfortable? This kind of night was too perfect. My body and mind were at ease.

I put my arms around his neck and spoke softly in his ear. “Don’t stop, Hunter.”

Joy and surprise lit up his face. He whispered back, coaxingly, “Will you come to my office next time? I have so many things I want to show you.”

I smiled. “Yes.”

The night breeze stirred the curtains. Moonlight spilled across the floor. And all around us, on the mountain, the wildflowers were in full bloom.
