My Husband Had a Child With Someone Else While I Was Carrying His Chapter 10

The truth was razor sharp, and it cut open every festering wound.

The ballroom fell silent all at once.

Samuel was the first to snap. He smashed his wine glass on the floor and jabbed a finger at Sally’s

face, cursing her out.

“Sally, you’ve got the nerve to come at us? All the gifts I’ve handed you over the years I might as

well have thrown them to a dog!”

Summer grabbed at my sleeve in a panic, her face a mess of tears and snot.

“Rachel, I was wrong, I really lost my head for a second. I was jealous of you, okay? Jealous that you had everything. Lucas loved you so much, and you had that great job on top of it…”

I shook her hand off in disgust and tossed it aside like a rag caked in mud.

Nicole had gone ashen, wrung her hands, and tried to smooth things over.

“Rachel, honey, what Sally did was wrong, I know that, but the baby’s innocent in all of this. And

since nothing serious ended up happening to you…”

“Shut up.” Lucas roared out of nowhere and cut Nicole off.

His eyes were bloodshot, and he stared Sally down. “You stuck a heat patch on the kid on purpose? You knocked over her pregnancy meds on purpose?”

Sally was so scared she crumpled to the floor, and the child in her arms started wailing. “Lucas, I

didn’t, she’s framing me…”

Lucas didn’t spare her another glance.

He turned around and walked toward me one slow step at a time, like a man who had lost his soul.

Then he dropped. This man, who had always stood above everyone, who had always believed he

held every card, knelt straight down in front of me for the whole room to see.

His hands were shaking, and he reached for the hem of my dress but didn’t dare touch it.

“Rachel, I’m sorry.”

His voice was broken past recognition. “I was blind, I was so full of myself. I had no idea she could be this vicious. I thought she was just someone weak who needed looking after.”

“I’ll go back to the hospital with you, I’ll put her behind bars, I’ll make all of it up to you and the

baby…”

He lifted his head, and his eyes were full of a desperate, pleading kind of hope.

He thought that all he had to do was own up and come back, and I would still be standing right where he left me, waiting the way I always had.

I looked down at him and pulled a document out of my bag, then held it out. It was divorce papers.

I had already signed my name.

“Lucas, your apology means nothing now.”

My voice was calm, without a single ripple in it. “My child doesn’t need a father who’s always too late. You can spend the rest of your life right here, in the ruins you built with your own hands.”

I didn’t give him another look, and I turned and walked out of the ballroom.

The doors closed behind me and shut out the sound of Lucas screaming his heart out.

Three months later, in a private hospital in another city, I safely delivered a healthy baby girl.

Sunlight spilled through the curtains and fell across her face, warm and bright.

Later, I heard from an old coworker how things had ended for Lucas.

Sally got three years for aggravated assault and falsifying evidence.

The scandal wrecked Summer’s name across the industry, and her company let her go, so she

crawled back to her hometown.

The damage to his reputation cost Lucas his company. Several big projects fell through one after

another, and his cash flow dried up.

He never remarried, and he sent that child back home for Nicole to raise.

People said he often sat alone in what used to be our marriage home, staring at the empty crib, and

he would sit there like that for a whole night at a stretch.

He finally understood that once some things break, they can never be put back together.

I closed my phone and looked at my daughter sleeping in my arms, then softly kissed her forehead.

Outside the window, spring had arrived, and everything was in bloom.

My life was just beginning.
