My Husband Gave Her My Parachute Chapter 10

Three days later, the search of Black Hawk Canyon officially ended.

For three straight days, rescuers had used fine sieves to search the two-kilometer area of loose

rock around the site.

All the remains they recovered fit inside one tiny metal box.

Bone fragments. A few pieces of bloodied fingernails. A platinum wedding ring, badly mangled

by the impact.

That was all the medical examiner received.

They were the last traces of Claire anyone could recover.

Ryan had been unconscious in the hospital for two days and two nights.

When he woke, he was visibly thinner, his eyes sunken. His gaze never settled on anyone.

The door to his room was pushed open.

Mia walked in wearing a black dress, holding a bouquet of white lilies.

She paused in the doorway, as if checking whether he’d throw her out. The handprint on her

face still hadn’t faded. Tears already filled her eyes.

“Ryan.”

She came closer and reached for his hand.

“Eat something, okay? Claire’s gone. Starving yourself won’t bring her back.”

He didn’t respond, so she went on.

“The detectives questioned me and said I might be charged with involuntary manslaughter. You have to help me. You said I was your favorite student, and you’d always protect me.”

Her voice grew more urgent.

“I didn’t want her to die. I didn’t know the plane had gone off course. I thought we were over the sea.”

Ryan slowly turned to look at her.

His eyes were unfocused, his face blank. She didn’t dare take another step toward him.

“You didn’t mean to?”

He threw back the covers and got out of bed barefoot.

A thick cast encased his right ankle. He limped toward Mia as if he couldn’t feel any pain.

Mia backed away.

“Ryan…”

He suddenly grabbed her by the throat and pinned her to the wall. Her feet nearly left the floor.

Mia kicked her legs and grabbed his wrist with both hands. All she could manage were broken

gasps.

“You cut the main parachute lines. You locked the reserve with industrial zip ties.”

His grip tightened until his knuckles turned white.

“Which part of that was an accident? Tell me.”

He stared into her wide eyes.

“And that glass of water. You put a sedative in it so I couldn’t think straight in the cabin. So I’d do what you said and give you her rig. Didn’t you?”

Mia’s face turned purplish red.

At the mention of a sedative, her eyes flew wide.

He’d found out about that, too,

The officers stationed outside heard the commotion and rushed in. They grabbed Ryan’s arms.

“Ryan, let go! Now!”

“She’ll be charged with murder. Let her go!”

Together, the officers pulled him away.

Mia collapsed onto the floor, clutching her throat. She coughed violently and gasped for air, unable to get up.

One officer took out a pair of handcuffs and locked them around her wrists.

“Mia Carter, you’re under arrest on suspicion of murder. We’ve obtained the cloud backup of Claire’s camera footage. We also found physical evidence in the club’s equipment storage room.”

Mia’s legs were too weak to hold her up. She could only cry and struggle toward Ryan.

“Help me! Ryan, I don’t want to go to prison. Get me a good lawyer, please!”

Ryan stood beside the bed, looking down at her.

“I’ll hire the best lawyer in the country. I’ll pay every cent.”

He paused.

“But he won’t be defending you. He’ll represent Claire and assist the prosecution. He’ll give the court every reason to impose the maximum sentence. I’ll demand the death penalty. And I won’t stop until you’re executed.”

Mia’s sobs stopped abruptly.

She looked up at him, nothing but terror on her face.

Two officers led her out of the hospital room.
