My Husband Gave Her My Parachute Chapter 06

Ryan stood motionless, as if he hadn’t understood.

The tablet slipped from his hand. The screen cracked on impact, but the red coordinates kept

flashing.

Black Hawk Canyon.

3,000 meters.

The main parachute lines had been cut. The reserve was locked shut.

Without a parachute, she’d hit the rocks at roughly two hundred kilometers an hour. No

number of championship titles could change the outcome.

Her body would be smashed to pieces.

“Impossible.”

He backed up two steps, his back hitting the cabin wall.

“Claire can’t be dead. She’s a national champion with over two thousand jumps. She can change her glide path, find a slope, find somewhere to break her fall…”

He kept shaking his head.

“She’s just trying to scare me. She has to be.”

Ryan suddenly lunged at Mark and grabbed him by the collar.

“Where are the helicopters? Doesn’t the base have two rescue helicopters? Why haven’t they

taken off?”

Mark could barely breathe. He grabbed Ryan’s wrists.

“The canyon’s full of crosswinds over sixty kilometers an hour. The rescue team says they can’t get in. If they force it, they’ll crash.”

“Then I’ll fly it myself!”

Ryan shoved him aside and picked up a flight helmet from the deck. Stumbling, he rushed

toward the helipad onshore.

Mia scrambled up, holding her swollen face. She ran after him and wrapped her arms around

his legs.

“Ryan, don’t go! Those winds will bring the helicopter down!”

She looked up at him.

“If Claire’s already fallen, you can’t save her by going in there. Are you going to risk a crash

looking for a dead woman?”

A dead woman.

Ryan looked down at her. Those words kept echoing in his ears.

The young student he’d always protected now had tears streaking her face. Her makeup was

smeared.

All she cared about was whether he’d leave and what would happen to her next.

For her, he’d taken away Claire’s custom rig.

He’d known she’d cut the lines, yet he’d done nothing to stop her.

When Claire asked for help, he’d mocked her. He’d said to let her choke on a few more

mouthfuls of seawater.

Ryan lifted his foot and kicked Mia in the chest.

She cried out and slammed back against the yacht’s railing. She curled up on the deck,

struggling to breathe through the pain.

“Stay away from me,”

Ryan looked at her, his voice almost flat.

“If anything’s happened to Claire, I’ll kill you. And I won’t spare your family, either.”

He didn’t look at her again. He rushed into the helicopter cockpit.

The rotors began to spin. Their downdraft overturned the sun umbrellas along the dock.

Warnings to abort takeoff kept coming over the radio.

Ryan didn’t answer. He lifted the helicopter off the ground and plunged into dark clouds. He

headed for the gray mountains to the north.
