My Husband Faked His Death Chapter 16

I flipped through the photos casually. When I swiped too far, I came across a picture of me from my college days.
“What’s this? How do you have a photo of me? This angle looks like a candid.”
Ryan stiffened, then snatched the phone back. “You saw wrong!”
I blinked and gave a knowing “Oh.”
“If I saw wrong, never mind. I was going to ask if you wanted to date me, but I guess I was overthinking it.”
“You didn’t see wrong.”
Ryan pulled up the photo again and set it in front of me. “You didn’t see wrong. I took it without you knowing. When you were in college, I gave a speech at your school. I saw you and took a picture…”
He looked at me, and the feeling in his eyes was finally laid bare. No more hiding.
“But I was married to Jake. That’s not okay, is it?”
Ryan’s expression turned serious. He moved closer. “It is okay. Jake was just a kid my brother and sister‑in‑law adopted. He made a big mistake as an adult and was kicked out of the Sullivan family long ago. I only helped pay for his college out of respect for my late brother and his wife.”
I nodded, then reached out and took his hand. “Three‑month trial period. Whether you get promoted depends on your performance.”
Ryan nodded eagerly.
“Since we’re done with work for today, how about pasta again?”
Maybe because I hadn’t eaten pasta for four years, I’d become obsessed.
I had to have it every two or three days, or I’d feel off. Ryan had been joining me for a long time.
He never seemed to get tired of it, always finding a new Italian restaurant to try.
“I just found another good one. Let’s go.”
But just as we stepped out of the office, someone dropped to their knees in front of me.
“Mia, please go find Jake! He’s been missing for three days! I can’t find him!”
