My Husband Died Twice And Both Times He Lied Chapter 05

Driven by hatred, I walked back to the hospital step by step, ready to settle the score with Maya.

My mother suddenly rushed over from a distance, her eyes red, and slapped me across the face.

Before I could react, Mrs. Weston Sr. slapped me too.

“Evelyn! Your baby is dead, and there’s nothing to be done about it. How could you hurt Maya’s baby?”

“I thought you were kindhearted. I never imagined you could be this selfish and vicious.”

My ears rang. I covered my stinging face and forced out an explanation, disappointed enough to almost laugh.

“I just stepped out. When would I have had the chance to hurt anyone?”

But they had already decided I was guilty. They grabbed me and dragged me into Maya’s hospital room.

Maya was sobbing pitifully, holding the baby in her arms.

“Evelyn! What did I ever do to make you have someone give my baby laxatives?”

“You were my best friend. How could you do this to me?”

Seeing her put on that act made my whole body shake with rage.

“Maya, stop pretending. Weren’t you the one who killed my baby?”

The moment I said that, Gavin rushed up to me and nearly crushed the bones in my wrist.

“Evelyn, if you’re going to accuse someone, bring evidence. For all we know, this happened because you resented Maya for having a baby while the only child you had was a bastard.”

I stared at him in disbelief. No matter how hard I tried, I could not reconcile him with the man who had shielded me under his body three years ago.

Powerlessness swept through me. My lips curled into a bitter, mocking smile.

“If you all only believe what you think you saw, then so be it.”

Then I wrenched myself free from him and turned to leave.

But at the doorway, a large crowd of patients’ family members suddenly surged in.

They glared at me with bloodshot eyes, shouting like they had gone mad.

“Evelyn Bennett is an unethical doctor! She drugged the babies in the nursery for money!”

“Do you even have a conscience? My grandson was perfectly healthy when he was born, and now he can’t stop vomiting!”

“Everyone, I heard she lost her own baby and did this out of jealousy!”

“Someone like her doesn’t deserve to be a doctor!”

Countless filthy insults crashed down on me.

Unease crept over me, and I picked up my phone to call hospital security.

But Gavin snatched it away.

“When you do something wrong, you should face the punishment.”

My eyes went red, and my chest heaved with agitation.

“I never drugged anyone. If you don’t believe me, check the security footage!”

The moment I finished speaking, someone suddenly cut in.

“Don’t believe her! The doctors and the hospital are all colluding with each other. They’re working together to hurt our babies for profit!”

“Today, we’re getting justice!”

One person charged first, and countless others followed, surrounding me with clubs and knives.

Someone cut my hair with scissors. Someone else swung a club into my back and stomach.

I curled up in pain, but they were not satisfied. They kicked me and punched me again and again.

The family, friend, and man I loved had once treated me like their darling.

Now, for Maya’s sake, not one of them lifted a finger to help me.

Maya cried anxiously, “Mom, Dad, save Evelyn!”

My mother turned her head away as if in anger. “She did this out of jealousy. I don’t have a daughter like her.”

My father gave in too. “If she did wrong, then punishment is only fair.”

Only when I had been beaten to the edge of suffocation did Gavin roar with red eyes.

“Where’s your boyfriend? Tell him to come protect you!”

I said nothing.

In the final moment before my consciousness faded, all I heard was the sound of the bones in both my hands breaking.

When I woke again, three days had passed. I completed my discharge paperwork and went to the airport.

After the plane landed, Gavin called me over and over.

I blocked his number and stepped into the secret research facility.

A week later, Gavin finally got through after being blocked for seven days.

“Evelyn, we found out what happened last time. I misunderstood you. Come back. Mom and Dad miss you.”

The next second, he heard a cold male voice.

“Please accept our condolences. Dr. Bennett was involved in a medical research trial when a toxic gas leak occurred. She died heroically in the line of duty.”
