My Husband Begged to Leave Me for His Dead Ex on My Deathbed Chapter 10

And Jason? He drowned himself in bars.

It was like as long as he was drunk, he couldn’t think of her. His chest hurt a little less.

Three years passed.

He never stopped searching. Any lead, any whisper, he chased it to the ends of the earth.

Then a friend told him an top medical school abroad had produced some medical prodigy.

A researcher specializing in brain cancer. Recently made a breakthrough. Back in the country for a lecture.

Everyone wanted a glimpse of the brilliant, beautiful genius.

“Jason, you should check it out. My dad got two tickets and he’s forcing me to go.”

Jason was annoyed, but he went along.

The lecture was boring at first. He closed his eyes the moment he sat down.

After a while, applause thundered around him.

He opened his eyes, impatient.

And there she was. Smiling on stage.

“Hello, I’m Lynn Leonard, and I’m honored to—”

In an instant, her cool, clear voice was all he could hear.

His eyes trembled.

Stella. Alive.

“Sir! Sir, please calm down.”

By the time he came to, he was already gripping her slender wrist.

The audience was stunned. Jason’s friend rushed up.

“Jason, that’s not Stella! That’s the medical genius!”

Jason didn’t believe it. He held on tighter.

“Stella, don’t pretend you don’t know me.”

He stared at her face, searching for a crack.

But her eyes held only confusion, even fear. Not a trace of guilt.

No. Stella couldn’t have forgotten him. They had been so close.

My assistant stepped in.

“Sir, please calm down. This is Miss Lynn Leonard.”

“Sir, if you don’t let go, we’ll call the police.”

He lowered his head, his voice raw.

“I’m sorry. You look just like my wife.”

I nodded and said nothing.

That night, the scandal was all over the news.

Lynn told me later, laughing as I organized reports.

Jason followed me everywhere, claiming business.

I wasn’t stupid. Free money? I’d take it.

But outside of work, I gave him nothing.

He sent designer toys. Roses flown in from France.

They all ended up in the trash.

He even threw a pool party competition. Winner would get a rare James family artifact.

Leonard didn’t have many hobbies. I wanted to win it for his birthday.

Lynn was nervous.

“Sis, he’s up to something.”

The James empire had fingers everywhere, including medical tech. I’d need funding and partnerships down the line. If I couldn’t avoid him, I’d face him head on.

“Don’t worry.”

When I showed up, Jason looked like he’d expected it.

“I heard Miss Leonard loves swimming. Funny—my wife is terrified of water. If you can swim a lap, I’ll believe you’re not her.”

I’d known this day would come. I knew Jason wouldn’t let me go. Fine. I’d erase every last doubt.

Three competitors. Six hundred meters round trip.

The whistle blew. I dove in.

The others turned back. My lane had no movement.

On shore, Jason gripped his glass. Why wasn’t I surfacing?

At the last second, I broke through—flag in hand. I won.

“Impressive, Miss Leonard. Brains and athleticism.”

I smiled and went to change.

Jason blocked me.

I took off my cap.

“Sorry, Mr. James. I’m not her.”

I stepped toward the restroom.

He grabbed my wrist and pressed me against the wall.

I stared at him. “Jason, let go!”

“I told you I’m not her. Let go.”

He ignored my curses. His fingertips traced the faint scar at my waist.

“Stella. You can’t fool me.”

“You got this saving me at sixteen, cut by a rock. You’ve been afraid of water ever since.”

His eyes reddened.

“And you didn’t lose your memory, did you?”

I didn’t answer.

He was right. I remembered everything. I’d wanted a new life. A clean break from the past.

Now that he’d seen through me, I dropped the act.

“So what?”

I crossed my arms and looked him over. “What do you want to say? What are you going to do?”

“I’m sorry. Three years ago, I didn’t know—”

“I don’t care.”

“Damage is done. I can’t pretend it’s fine. All I can do is not hate you.”

“Don’t come near me again. Don’t make me hate you more.”

He lowered his head.

After that night, he stayed away.

I thought he’d understood.
