My Husband Begged to Leave Me for His Dead Ex on My Deathbed Chapter 05

Jason leaned against his car, watching me.

He saw the swelling on my face.

Something flickered in his eyes. He reached for my cheek.

I pulled away.

He frowned.

“Stella, I told you. Apologize to Nina. We can still be friends. You can come to the engagement.”

I laughed bitterly.

Jason hadn’t changed. He protected who he loved.

Now it just wasn’t me anymore.

“What, afraid I’ll ruin your big day?”

His brows drew tighter.

He didn’t understand why I’d changed from the gentle girl at the beach.

I’d turned cruel. Unreasonable.

Nina ran out after him.

I left them to it.

I wandered like a ghost.

Workers were setting up the square. A giant moon hung overhead.

Small diamonds spelled out: “My moon in the clouds, this feeling I send to you.”

“Did you hear? The Young heiress got kicked out by her own mother.”

“Rich families are messy. She seemed sweet, but she’s full of jealousy.”

“Shh—is that her?”

“Stay away from her.”

I took a deep breath. I could barely hear their words anymore. None of it was kind.

The wind made my head ache. I sat on a bench.

My phone buzzed.

“Stella, when are you coming? The sooner we start, the better.”

—Uncle Leonard.

My father’s best friend. A top neurologist abroad.

He’d do anything to save me.

My visa was ready.

I went back to pack, but Nina blocked me.

“Stella! Your mother didn’t disown you!”

What was she playing at?

“Move.”

She grabbed my arm. Her new nails dug in.

“Stella, if you love him, I’ll let you have him.”

“Ow.”

I didn’t get it. Then I saw a familiar figure in the distance.

Nina smiled.

“Stella, die.”

“If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have died so horribly last time.”

“Your fault.”

She pulled us both into the lake.

Jason arrived just in time.

Nina was rescued in seconds.

He carried her to the ambulance.

As I sank, I heard his voice—cold, barely controlled.

“Watch her. Don’t let her up. Just don’t let her drown.”

My head screamed. I didn’t even fight.

I woke to disinfectant and cheap beds.

Thin walls.

“How sad—both brought in for drowning, but one gets a VIP suite. This one gets a shared ward. No visitors.”

“Every sad story has a reason. She tried to kill someone because her mother adopted another girl. She deserves it.”

The nurses’ voices faded.

I sniffled. I stared out the window.

News on TV: Jason’s engagement in three days.

I pulled out my IV.

I took a taxi home, grabbed my documents, and hailed a ride.

“Airport.”

Check-in. Security. Boarding.

The moment I leaned back and closed my eyes, the tension finally eased.

From now on, mountains and oceans between us.

Jason, we’re done.
