My Husband Acted Single Before Clients, So I Produced Divorce Papers Chapter 03

The next morning, I had barely reached the office when I saw a crowd gathered around reception.

Someone turned, spotted me, and called out, “Ms. Bennett’s here.”

The crowd parted.

Sabrina stood in the middle, flanked by a middle-aged couple and a younger man.

I could guess who they were.

They had to be Sabrina’s family.

The moment Sabrina’s mother saw me, she stormed forward and pointed straight at me.

“So you’re Elise Bennett. You’re a manager, for God’s sake, and you still stoop this low?”

I frowned and took one step back, just far enough to get out of spitting range.

She turned to the people around us.

“I’m telling you, this is the woman who tried to steal my future son-in-law. Sabrina and Julian have already had their engagement photos taken. They’re about to set a wedding date!”

She pulled several printed photos from her bag.

In one, the ocean breeze lifted the edge of Sabrina’s veil. Julian stood beside her in a black suit, one arm around her waist and the other holding the trailing edge of the veil.

Sabrina looked radiant against the ocean backdrop.

I recognized the suit immediately.

Last year, Julian had told me he needed something more formal for a conference dinner in Sunhaven.

I had spent an entire afternoon shopping with him before we finally chose that one.

When I remained silent, Sabrina’s mother raised her voice even more.

“What, nothing to say? Sabrina told me you were trying to land a project with her company. She’s your client, and you still went after the man she’s about to marry? Have you no shame?”

I looked at Sabrina.

She stood behind her mother with swollen, red-rimmed eyes, as if she had been crying for hours.

The younger man stepped in front of her, blocking my view.

“Ms. Bennett, you’re going to answer for this today. Either you apologize to my sister or you resign. Otherwise, we’ll ruin your reputation and make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of woman you are.”

A coworker murmured nearby.

“Isn’t Elise married? Why would she…?”

Someone else lowered their voice.

“She says she’s married, but have you ever seen her husband pick her up from work even once?”

The whispers immediately grew louder.

“Actually, no.”

“She even came to the annual company party alone.”

“Could it be…?”

Sabrina’s mother heard them and raised her voice again.

“What? You’re married and you still go after someone else’s man? Looks like this isn’t even your first time. No wonder you’re standing there so calmly.”

“You’re apologizing to Sabrina in front of everyone today, or this isn’t over.”

Tara emerged from the office carrying a cup of coffee.

She stopped short when she saw the crowd, then hurried over to Sabrina.

“Ms. Grant, what are you doing here? If something’s wrong, let’s go inside and talk. Making a scene out here won’t look good.”

Sabrina burst into tears and threw herself into Tara’s arms.

“Tara, I’m seriously falling apart. I’m about to marry him, and then I see the two of them grabbing at each other right in front of me. How am I supposed to go through with this wedding? How am I supposed to face anyone after this?”

Tara patted her back before looking up at me.

“Elise, just explain what happened. What exactly was going on between you and Professor Mercer at dinner yesterday? If it’s a misunderstanding, clear it up now. Ms. Grant is several years younger than you. Come on, we’re older than she is. We can afford to cut her some slack.”

Someone nearby chimed in quietly.

“Elise, don’t just stand there saying nothing. If it’s a misunderstanding, clear it up.”

Tara immediately followed up.

“Exactly. If you didn’t make a move on Professor Mercer, just tell Ms. Grant what you two went outside to talk about. If you’ve done nothing wrong, there’s no reason you can’t say it, right?”

Sabrina’s mother grabbed my hand.

“Exactly. If you have nothing to hide, then what can’t you tell us?”

I pulled free and looked at her calmly.

“Whether I’ve done anything wrong isn’t for you to decide.”

She pointed a finger in my face.

“Don’t act so high and mighty. I swear I’ll—”

I took out my phone and called Julian in front of everyone.

“Since you all want the truth, you can hear it from someone else.”

The phone rang several times.

The moment he answered, I switched to speaker.

His tired voice came through.

“What’s wrong?”

The familiarity in his tone sent a ripple through the crowd.

The way everyone looked at me changed instantly.

Sabrina remained in Tara’s arms, crying quietly.

Ignoring their reactions, I continued.

“Julian, your fiancée is at my office with your future mother-in-law and future brother-in-law.”

The line went silent.

“Your future mother-in-law is holding your engagement photos, calling you Sabrina’s husband, and accusing me of trying to seduce you.”

“Come over here and explain it to them yourself.”

I ended the call and slipped my phone back into my bag.

Then I looked at Sabrina.

Her tears hadn’t dried, and her expression had stiffened slightly.

“Your husband says he’s on his way.”

I held her gaze.

“When he gets here, ask him yourself.”
