Kael swallowed hard and opened the letter.

It was short.

I’m leaving. I’ll see the human world none of you chose, for the sake of who we used to be.

I’m leaving the pendant Ronan wanted. Throw it away. Give it to Elena. I don’t care.

That is, if she can give you what I did a friendship that was supposed to last forever

For the sake of everything we’ve been through, I hope it was worth it. Lillian

Kael’s hands were shaking so hard the paper rattled. His tears hit the page before he could stop them, making the ink bleed.

Mason squeezed his eyes shut. The veins on the back of his hand stood out like cords.

“Lillian… Lillian…”

They choked out her name, calling for someone who would never look back.

Julian and Ronan sent the audio of the girls confessing to the group chat, then went straight to

Elena at the penthouse.

“Were you the one who told those girls Lillian was shopping for a mate from our group?”

“They told us everything. Since the day you became Lillian’s friend, you’ve played the victim in front of us while trashing her behind her back!”

“You were jealous of her parents, of us, of everything she had. So you lied about her, turned the other girls against her, and manipulated us into cutting her off!”

They were barely holding it together. The thought of how much Lillian had trusted them only made

it worse.

Elena had been admiring her pile of expensive gifts. The ambush caught her completely off guard.

She scrambled to explain.

“You’re seriously going to believe them over me?”

“Those girls weren’t just jealous of Lillian. They hate me too. They can’t stand that you guys give

me so much attention. Julian, Ronan, don’t listen to them!”

“Funny. You used to call them your good friends.”

Kael dragged his hands down his face.

Elena had been wearing a different face for every audience. How had they missed it?

Kael kicked Elena out of the group chat and threw her out of the penthouse.

They couldn’t reach Lillian, so each of them pinned a message to the top of his PackNet page.

[Lillian has been one of us since we were kids. We’re looking into every rumor about her “shopping/ for a mate” and every attempt to isolate her. We also owe her the truth: we lied to her and pushed

her toward the human world because of Elena. If she sees this, we just want a chance to make it

right.]

We’d known each other for over ten years. We had mutual friends everywhere. It didn’t take long for

someone to forward the post to me.

“Lillian, those guys seem like they really mean it. You’re seriously never going to talk to them again?”

My lab partner was watching me.

I kept my eyes on the weapons model I was taking apart.

“I’m buried right now. I barely even leave the lab. When exactly am I supposed to see them?”

“Okay, okay. You and your work. Forget I asked.”

My lab partner held up her hands.

“But your families are close, right? Your parents are friends. You’ll run into them eventually- holidays, visits, something.”

My hands went still. I kept my eyes down.

“We’re done with each other. We’re strangers now. And strangers don’t care who they bump into.”

My lab partner passed those exact words along to them.

They bought plane tickets and flew to the human world.

But the human world was massive, and I was nowhere to be found.

They spent days searching near the college, asking about the early–admission students.

Everyone told them the same thing: those students were classified and off–limits. You couldn’t just

walk in and ask about them.

Kael bit through his lip without realizing it. That night, they got wasted at a dive bar in town.

They flew back to the pack with sand in their pockets, the only thing they could carry back from a world that had swallowed Lillian whole.
