My Fire Captain Husband Locked Me In To Attend Her Birthday Chapter 05

I came to with voices on the other side of the door. A doctor, clipped and furious.

“The patient’s post-miscarriage wounds never healed properly, she’s got multiple lacerations and fractures on top of that, then she took a blow hard enough to split her abdominal incision. Ten

more minutes and we’d have lost her.”

Silence.

Then Dominic’s voice, gutted. “Miscarriage?”

The doctor’s tone sharpened. “You didn’t know? It’s clearly documented. She terminated a pregnancy following trauma from a fire escape jump a week ago. You’re her husband. How do you

not know?”

Nothing.

The doctor kept going. “And those cuts on her body aren’t from a fall. The police are already investigating an aggravated burglary and arson suspect from that night. Your house fire wasn’t an

accident.”

“What?” Dominic’s voice cracked. “Burglary?”

“Clear signs of a struggle. Blunt-force trauma to the abdomen. Defensive wounds on her arms

and shoulders. She was forced out that window.”

Dead quiet.

Then the door opened.

I opened my eyes. Dominic stood at my bedside, his face bloodless.

He opened his mouth and the words came out tight. “Willa. Was someone else in the house that night?”

I turned my face away.

He reached for me. His hand was still rising when the door swung open again.

Tessa swept in holding a thermos, her voice still sugar-sweet. “Dom, I brought you some homemade

soup. Don’t worry, she probably got the doctor to lie for her again. You know how she…”

Slap.

Dominic’s palm connected with her cheek and sent her stumbling sideways. She stared at him,

blank with shock.

“Dom?”

“Get out.” His voice had dropped to something dangerous. “Get the hell out.”

Her hand flew to her face, tears already spilling. “You hit me?”

“I said get out!”

He grabbed her by the wrist and hauled her to the door, shoving her into the hallway.

“You told me she was faking. Every single time. I never would’ve locked her in if I hadn’t listened to you. And if you hadn’t pushed that whole birthday thing, I would’ve picked up my damn phone.”

Tessa’s voice pitched high and desperate. “Don’t put this on me! You’re the one who said she always called in fake emergencies. You’re the one who told the firehouse to ignore her!”

Her words landed like a grenade.

Dominic froze.

I turned my head slowly and looked at him.

His phone rang.

“Captain Vance, this is Millbrook PD. We picked up the suspect from your home invasion and arson. His timeline matches your wife’s 911 calls exactly.”

“We’ve also recovered your department group chat logs and CAD system flags. You need to get

down to the station. Now.”

Dominic’s grip on the phone turned his knuckles white.

“I’m on my way.”

He glanced at me, mouth opening like he might say something. Then he turned and ran.
