The cuffs grazed my wrist. Patricia was screaming, “Take her! Get her out of here!”

Derek hung his head, shoulders trembling—the perfect grieving grandson.

Onlookers pushed closer. I heard phones recording. Murmurs.

“Disgusting. She went after an old lady.”

“People like that deserve the death penalty.”

The cold steel was about to click shut.

I sucked in a breath and stepped back.

“Wait.”

Quiet. But everyone heard it.

The officer frowned. “Mrs. Foster, you need to cooperate.”

“I am cooperating.” I looked straight at him, voice steady. “But first I need to show you something.”

Derek’s head came up. His expression still held that grieving mask, but his fingers curled slightly at his side.

Patricia shrieked, “What else is there to look at? The evidence is right there! She did it! She killed her!”

I ignored her. I pulled out my phone and opened a folder.

“Officers, yesterday my husband asked me to bring his grandmother her medication. But before I went to her house, I made two stops—first at a CVS, then at the hospital.”

I held the phone toward them.

“This is a lab report from Fairview General. Dated yesterday afternoon. The original bottle I turned in for testing—it’s already sitting in your evidence room.”

The officer took the phone. His expression shifted after two seconds.

Derek’s eyes locked onto the screen. That grief on his face—it was peeling off, one layer at a time. Behind him, Patricia kept screaming that I’d staged the whole thing.

The officer listening to her still looked skeptical. Derek’s Adam’s apple bobbed. His mouth twitched upward.

Everyone in that hallway believed I was done.
