The transfer wasn’t a retreat. It was a promotion. I was here to lead the project team.

After the confetti settled, I pulled out my USB drive and got to work.

I walked the team through every phase of the project plan I’d put together. No notes, no stumbling.

When I finished, the room broke into applause.

“Elise, I think this team just got a serious upgrade.”

The rest of the day clicked into place like I’d been there for years.

Then I walked out of the building after work and saw them.

Spencer and Graham. They’d burned through multiple connecting flights to get here.

Their suits looked like they’d slept in them. They probably had.

Hair wrecked. Eyes bloodshot. Both of them running on nothing.

Spencer’s whole body sagged with relief the second he saw me.

“Elise. God, I found you.”

“Come home with me. Please. Let’s get married.”

I looked at him the way you look at someone you used to know.

“Spencer, I know that in your head, we never ended.”

“But for me, it’s been over for two years. I stopped loving you a long time ago.”

“It doesn’t matter which parts were you and which parts were Graham.”

“Because the person I loved for those two years was a lie. He never existed.”

Spencer staggered back like I’d hit him.

Graham dragged a hand through his hair. His composure was gone.

“Elise, I get that those two years were built on a lie.”

“But when it was just us, what I felt was real.”

“I told myself it was an act. But somewhere along the way, I actually fell in love with you.”

I turned to him. My voice was flat.

“Is that right?”

“You held me while I cried and then turned around and served it up to your friends as entertainment.”

“You think that’s love?”

Graham looked like the ground had shifted under him. His eyes went glassy.

Spencer moved closer. His voice had lost every trace of authority.

“Elise, I know I was wrong.”

“Can you just… give me one chance? One chance to fix this.”

“I can’t do this without you.”

I exhaled slowly.

“And then what? All the damage just disappears?”

“You both say you love me, but neither of you ever actually saw me.”

“All it took was one person whispering in your ear, and everything I was to you crumbled.”

“If that’s what love looks like, I want no part of it.”

“Love is trust. Love is respect. Love is choosing someone and meaning it.”

“I don’t hate either of you. But I’ll never love you again.”

I turned and walked away.

Both of their voices broke behind me at the same time, raw and ragged.

“Elise…”

But neither of them came after me.

After that, they kept showing up. Sometimes one, sometimes both. It didn’t matter.

None of it touched me anymore.

My first project in Harboridge broke every profit record the branch had.

The day my bonus hit, I walked outside and turned my face up to the sun.

It was so bright I had to squint.

Just like my future.
