My Fiancé’s Love Was Just a Test?! Too Bad I Passed by Leaving Chapter 06

Spencer went still.

Then he crossed the room in two steps and grabbed Graham by the collar.

“What the fuck did you just say? What do you mean she’s gone?”

Graham’s face was still swollen from the fight. He grabbed Spencer’s arm.

“She’s gone! She left!”

The blood drained out of Spencer’s face.

“What do you mean? Tell me what the fuck you mean!”

Graham told him everything.

That morning, a bank transfer from me had landed in Graham’s account.

He’d been drinking all night and didn’t see it until the afternoon.

The memo line was simple: [Repayment for every cent you spent on me.]

When he couldn’t get through to me, he called my office.

That’s when he found out I was already in the air.

“She took the overseas transfer. She’s on a plane to Harboridge.”

Spencer’s hands dropped from Graham’s collar. He was talking to himself.

“No. No, that’s impossible. She wouldn’t leave.”

“I told her I’d marry her today.”

“It’s true, Spencer!”

Graham’s voice cracked on the words.

Spencer pulled out his phone and called me again. And again. And again.

Nothing. The line was dead every time.

He called his assistant and told him to find out where I was.

The answer came back fast.

I’d taken the overseas posting. Five–year contract.

My plane was already in the air.

Spencer bolted for the door.

Vanessa stepped in front of him. Again.

He shoved her out of the way. She hit the floor.

“Don’t fucking touch me! I’m going to the airport!”

Vanessa shouted from the floor.

“Are you insane? What are you gonna do at the airport?”

“The plane already took off! There’s nothing there for you!”

“And I don’t even think she really left. This is a setup.”

Spencer turned on her.

“What do you mean?”

Vanessa pulled herself up and laid it out.

“Think about it. She’s a gold digger, and you just offered to marry her. Why would she walk away from that?”

“The overseas transfer thing is bait. She wants you to freak out and chase her.”

“She’s probably sitting in the terminal right now, waiting for you to show up. Then she’ll act all surprised and

say she missed her flight.”

The group latched onto it immediately.

“Vanessa’s right. You two go back seven years, Spencer. She’s not gonna find anyone better than you, and

she knows it.”

“Exactly. Don’t let her play you like this.”

Spencer stopped. He reached down and pulled Vanessa off the floor.

“Sorry. I lost it for a second.”

Vanessa looked up at him, all wounded softness.

“It’s not your fault, Spencer.”

“She just knows exactly how to get to you.”

The hours crawled.

The easy confidence from that morning was gone.

He kept checking his phone. Kept glancing at the door.

Nobody was joking anymore. The silence in the room had weight.

Five o’clock. No call. No knock.

He clicked the screen off and said it out loud, like hearing it might make it less real.

“It’s five. The courthouse is closed.”

No one made a sound. The room was so quiet you could hear the clock ticking.

Spencer lifted his head and looked at Vanessa.

When he spoke, his voice could have cut glass.

“You said she was playing hard to get.”

“You said she’d come running.”

“It’s five o’clock. Where is she?”

“Tell me. Where the hell is she?”
