I never went back to the apartment.

I stayed at a hotel near the office instead.

Malcolm told me to take a few days off before the transfer. I said no.

Falling apart wasn’t an option. It never had been.

I’d learned young that the only safety net that actually holds is money.

The night before my flight, Malcolm took me out for a farewell dinner.

We barely stepped out of the restaurant before we ran into Spencer’s crew.

Vanessa looked me up and down, then clapped her hands like she’d cracked a case.

“Wow. Gold digger of the year, ladies and gentlemen.”

“So there’s a third guy now? After Spencer and Graham?”

“How do you do it? Seriously, teach a class. I’d pay.”

She turned to Malcolm and looked him over like she was appraising furniture.

“Relax, Spencer. This one doesn’t look like he’s got more money than you.”

“Definitely just a backup.”

The peanut gallery chimed in right on cue.

“So that’s why she was already out when Spencer went to bail her out.”

“The second Spencer leaves, she’s got a new guy swooping in.”

“I thought girls like this only existed on reality TV. Can’t believe I’m seeing it in person.”

Spencer stared at me like a man who’d just walked in on his wife with someone else. We’d been broken up for two years.

“Who the hell is this guy?”

I almost laughed.

“Spencer, we broke up two years ago. Remember?”

“None of this is your business.”

A vein jumped in Spencer’s neck.

“We never broke up, Elise. That was the test.”

“I already told you. It was me the whole time.”

I looked him dead in the eye.

“Really? So when I slept with Graham, was that you too?”

Spencer went still. The color drained from his face, then flooded back, all rage.

He turned to Graham. Graham couldn’t meet his eyes.

Spencer punched him.

“You son of a bitch. I told you it was just an act!”

Graham staggered, then swung back. It was a full brawl in seconds.

I watched them go at each other like animals. Then I turned, walked away with Malcolm, and didn’t look back.

Spencer’s voice chased me down the street, raw and ragged between punches.

“Elise! I’ll be home tomorrow. We’re getting married.”

“Whatever you want, it’s yours. Just come home.”

Ridiculous. Even now, he was so sure I still wanted him.

Two years had killed whatever I’d felt. There was nothing left.

The next morning, I grabbed my bags and headed for the airport.

Spencer called over and over the whole way there.

I declined every one.

At the terminal, I pulled the SIM card out of my phone and dropped it in a trash can.

The plane lifted off, and Bellmont shrank beneath me.

None of it was mine anymore. And I didn’t want it to be.
