My Fiancé Took Her to the World Cup — and Left Me to Babysit Their Cat Chapter 08

Alex looked like a different person.

He seemed to have aged more than ten years overnight.

His hair had grown out and gone untrimmed, making him look a little sloppy.

Before, he had cared about his hair more than anything and got it cut every month.

Now his face was covered in stubble, and he had lost weight.

In the past, I could never look at him enough.

No matter how long I stared, I thought he was the most handsome man in the world.

Now that I looked at him again, he was nothing special.

He stood at my front door, waiting for me when I came home from work.

Before he even spoke, his eyes reddened and filled with tears.

“Ellie, I miss you so much.”

As he spoke, he walked toward me and reached out to hug me.

I pushed him away, cold and distant, as if he were a stranger.

“My parents aren’t home yet. You need to leave now. And don’t come back.”

“I know I was wrong, but don’t shut me out forever.”

“Can we not break up?”

He stepped forward again, trying to hug me.

In the past, every time we fought, as long as he realized I was truly angry, he would use this trick.

He would pull me into his arms and coax me with a few words.

Back then, I would calm down in his embrace.

I would compromise.

But now, let alone his touch, even his nearness made nausea rise in my chest.

This time, I slapped him.

“Alex, I’m not getting dragged back into this with you.”

“It’s been twelve years. I’m sick of being tangled up with you.”

“I don’t love you anymore. Put away your greed and let me go.”

His face turned with the slap.

Tears filled his eyes as he stared at me in disbelief.

The words I don’t love you anymore cut him deeply.

Over the years, I had fought with him and cried over him.

But I had never said those words.

I don’t love you anymore.

In love, that sentence was the final verdict.

“No. You can’t just stop loving me.”

“We’ve been together since we were eighteen. We fell in love at first sight on the first day of college.”

“You said you would love me for the rest of your life. We promised we would grow old together.”

I found it almost funny, and I laughed.

“Using old feelings to hold me hostage only worked when I still loved you.”

“Now that I don’t, that trick means nothing.”

“Alex, I don’t even want to talk to you anymore.”

“I only hope that from now on, the world is wide enough for us never to cross paths again.”

Even though my words were final, Alex still refused to give up.

He was panicked and humble.

“I know the problem was me and Serena. Serena and I have nothing to do with each other now.”

“I promise you, from now on, there will only be you and me in our life.”

“Before I came to find you, I already dealt with my relationship with Serena.”

Watching tears roll down his face, I felt no pity at all.

Only impatience at being pestered.

“Alex, you and Serena Whitmore will never truly be over. And even if you are, you and I can never go back.”

“Have I not made myself clear enough?”

“From beginning to end, you were greedy. You said you loved me while insisting Serena was only a friend.”

“But over the past twelve years, you did too many things with her that only couples do.”

“You went to concerts together. You drank together. You watched the World Cup together. You traveled together.”

“Even when you went on business trips, you took her with you. In the home where we lived, you left a room especially for her.”

“Her things were always in our house, and her place was another home for you.”

“You treated me like an idiot. You lied to me while living at her place and even kept box after box of condoms there.”

“The things you tried so hard to hide from me, even God couldn’t stand to watch anymore. So He chose to let us break up before we got married.”

“That is a good ending too.”

Alex broke down, crying in regret.

He raised his hand and slapped himself again and again without holding back.

“I was wrong. For the sake of the twelve years we were together, give me one last chance, okay?”

“I really can’t live without you. I truly want to make things right with you.”

“Serena is leaving the country. Barring something unexpected, she won’t come back.”

“To come find you, I’ve already cut ties with my parents.”

I suddenly remembered that yesterday, my short-form video account had received a private message.

Just three simple words.

[You won.]

It seemed Serena had sent it.

“Do you want to know why I’ll never forgive you?”

“Come with me.”
