My Fiancé Took Her to the World Cup — and Left Me to Babysit Their Cat Chapter 03

My Fiancé Took Her to the World Cup — and Left Me to Babysit Their Cat Chapter 03

Facing her provocative stare, I remained calm.

“A game meant for two stops being fun when a third person joins.”

I didn’t want to waste more words on her, so I asked again, “Where’s the pillow?”

Serena hadn’t expected me to be this calm. The smile on her face grew even faker.

She walked to the closet, opened it, and searched while deliberately complaining.

“Alex, honestly. Where did he put that pillow? He’s usually not this careless.”

“I really need to have a talk with him one of these days.”

I stood beside her without speaking and watched her put on her little show.

She pulled Alex’s clothes from the closet, including his boxers.

Serena looked at me and smiled.

“Elena, don’t misunderstand. Alex only stays here seven days a month at most.”

“Men need private space sometimes. When you’re away on business trips, he comes over.”

“He’s just lazy. When he’s here, I take care of him, so he doesn’t have to lift a finger.”

She called it an explanation, but every word was bait.

I said, “You don’t need to tell me about the two of you. I’m just here for the pillow.”

Serena looked as if she was waiting to see how long I could keep it together.

She pulled back the neatly spread blanket.

A pink lace-trimmed pillow was arranged at the head of the bed.

Next to it sat an opened box of condoms.

Serena followed my gaze to the box.

She said nothing, waiting for me to explode first.

I only said calmly, “I have other things to do. Hurry up.”

“Then let’s check the walk-in closet next door.”

I followed her to the walk-in closet.

An open suitcase sat on the floor.

There were some clothes inside, and on top of them was an unopened box of condoms.

Serena said, “I’m packing. Alex and I are flying overseas tomorrow for the World Cup.”

Seeing that I kept my face cold and didn’t respond, Serena deliberately added, “The World Cup only happens once every four years. It’s insanely popular. So many people want to get in, but they just can’t.”

“Some people keep trying to force themselves into a world they don’t belong in. They think if they try hard enough, they can change the ending.”

“But seats are fixed.”

“The people who can’t get in were never meant to be there.”

My patience finally ran out. My voice turned cold and sharp.

“I’m only here for the pillow. As for Alex, he’s yours.”

She startled for a second, then put on an innocent, wounded face.

“Elena, what are you talking about? Don’t get the wrong idea.”

“I was just talking about the World Cup. I didn’t mean anything else.”

I emphasized every word.

“I am here for the pillow.”

A knowing look flickered across her face. Then she suddenly seemed to remember something.

“I know where it is. Come with me.”

I followed her to the third room.

It had been turned into a cat room.

The moment I walked in, I saw the rectangular herbal sleep pillow with a white base and pale mint-green embroidery.

It was lying in the litter box.

It reeked of cat urine.

I stared at the pillow, now ruined by cat waste, and rage rushed to my head.

Serena put on a tone that was half innocent and half designed to make me lose my mind.

“I’m sorry, Elena. My cat is just too naughty.”

“It’s only a pillow. I’ll buy you a better one.”

“Alex is honestly too indulgent with the cat.”

I raised my hand and slapped Serena hard across the face.

“You did that on purpose!”

“Elena!”

Alex’s shout came immediately.

He pulled Serena into his arms and shielded her, checking the handprint on her cheek with obvious concern.

Serena cried pitifully, pretending to be considerate.

“Alex, don’t be mad at Elena.”

Alex frowned at me.

“It’s just a pillow. Did you have to go that far?”

My eyes went red with rage, and I slapped him too.

“Yes. I did.”

Alex’s face turned with the force of the slap. A pink handprint appeared on his cheek as he stared at me in disbelief.

“Elena, what the hell is wrong with you?”

“I’m finally crazy enough to cut you off for good! Alex, I regret loving you for twelve years!”

I turned and left.

This time, I would never look back.

The next day, I finished my final handover at the company and rolled my suitcase to the airport.

I received a message from Serena.

[I already bought you ten pillows online. They should arrive in the next couple of days, so keep an eye out.]

[Alex and I are about to board. My cat is a little delicate, so I made a spreadsheet of care instructions.]

[Just follow the spreadsheet and take care of it for me.]

Alex also sent me a message.

[On the ninth next month, I’ll come back on time and go with you to the County Clerk’s Office to sign the marriage license.]

I stared at the message and smiled coldly.

Alex, I will never show up for your version of “on time.”

From now on, you can watch your World Cup.

I will chase my freedom.
