My Fiancé Saved Her Painful Days, But Forgot Mine Chapter 03

“Shelly Carter?”

“What are you doing here?”

Mitch hurried over, his gaze dropping to my pale face and the IV taped to my hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick?”

I turned my head away.

“It’s none of your business.”

Lynn poked her head out from the next cubicle when she heard the commotion.

“Shelly?”

“Why are you in the hospital too?”

She threw back the blanket and started to get out of bed.

Mitch spun around and rushed to steady her.

“Stay still.”

“You’ll pull out your IV.”

Lynn leaned against his chest and looked at me with watery eyes.

“Shelly, are you still mad at me?”

“I never meant to take your boyfriend away from you.”

“My fever hit 102.2 last night, and I nearly passed out.”

“Mitch only stayed because he was scared something would happen.”

“Please don’t hold it against him.”

Then she gave Mitch a gentle push.

“I’m fine.”

“Go sit with Shelly instead.”

“I can handle an IV by myself.”

Mitch hesitated, then started toward my bed.

But with every step, he looked back at Lynn.

Before he reached me, a dull thud came from the next cubicle.

Mitch went rigid and ran back to her at once.

“Lynn!”

“How could you be so careless?”

He gently cupped her wrist, panic shaking his voice.

“Nurse!”

“We need a nurse over here.”

“There’s blood backing up into the IV line!”

Tears streamed down Lynn’s face, but she used her free hand to shove at his chest.

“Leave me alone!”

“I’ve told you over and over that we need boundaries, and you never listen.”

“Do you want Shelly to think I’m chasing after her boyfriend?”

Mitch stumbled back a step, then pulled her into his arms again.

“Who cares about boundaries when you’re hurt?”

“No one’s going to think that.”

“You’re practically my sister.”

“What’s wrong with me taking care of you?”

Still holding her, he turned and shouted at me.

“There.”

“Are you happy now, Shelly?”

“Lynn hurt herself trying to prove there’s nothing inappropriate between us, and she didn’t even care about her own health.”

I had not said a word.

The nurse preparing medication nearby rolled her eyes.

“Keep your voice down.”

“This is an ER, not your living room.”

Then she looked straight at Mitch.

“And for the record, that patient suddenly lifted her arm.”

“That’s why blood backed up into the IV line.”

“Get your facts straight before you start yelling at the girlfriend who’s clearly in real pain.”

Mitch froze.

Lynn quickly tucked her arm under the blanket, her voice thick with hurt.

“You’ve misunderstood.”

“Mitch only panicked because he’s worried about me…”

“Save the act,” the nurse cut in. “This is a hospital, not a teen drama.”

She turned back to adjust my IV.

Mitch stood there seething with nowhere to put his anger.

As soon as the nurse finished and walked away, he stormed over to my bed and yanked at the blanket.

“You’re unbelievable, Shelly.”

“You sat here looking helpless so the nurse would think Lynn was some kind of homewrecker, didn’t you?”

“They’re menstrual cramps.”

“Why did you even come all the way to the ER for this?”

“Did you come here just to upset Lynn?”

Lynn started crying and lightly hit his arm, begging him to stop yelling at me.

Mitch softened immediately and pulled her against him to comfort her.

I closed my eyes and stopped speaking.

Lynn cried on and off in the next cubicle for the rest of the night.

She was terrified people would call her a homewrecker and terrified I would stop being her best friend.

Mitch spent hours soothing her in a low voice and promising her that none of this was her fault.

Meanwhile, I endured the worst waves of pain alone.
