My Fiance Said Betrayal Was Mutual Revenge Chapter 08

Brynn opened her mouth to scream, but someone struck her from behind. She went

limp. When she woke, she was in the back of a truck.

The doors were locked. Her head swam with dizziness. Her limbs were useless, like

she’d been drugged. “Kyler! Let me out! Where are you taking me?! Don’t you dare-!”

Kyler locked the door himself. He watched the terror bloom in her eyes and spoke

quietly. Mrs. Peterson. This debt. I’m paying it back for you.

Three years later, I graduated with top honors from the most prestigious university in the

During those three years, alongside my core degree, I picked up a second major in
economics.

Every break. Every holiday. I didn’t let myself slow down. I was too terrified to stop. The

image of my mom dying, it replayed in my head on a loop.

My uncle saw how hard I was pushing. Out of pity, he brought me into his company,

taught me the business step by step. After handling over a dozen major cases, I could run

operations on my own.

I came back with one goal. Take back the company my father left behind. The one that

was supposed to be my mother’s legacy.

I walked into the old house. It looked exactly the same as it did three years ago. Only

one thing was different. A framed photo of my mom now stood in the living room, a few

candles and a small vase of dried flowers arranged in front of it.

My bedroom was spotless. But everything Kyler had ever given me, it was all gone. I

figured he’d probably come back every day for years, keeping it clean.

I sat on the couch and waited. At 9:30 that evening, Kyler walked through the door and

called out, comfortable, familiar. “Elowen. I’m home.” When he saw me on the couch, he

smiled. Calm.

“You’re being good today? Usually when I walk in, you’re already yelling at me for

strawberry shortcake. Look, I picked some up. But dinner first, okay?”

My brow furrowed. Strawberry shortcake? I stopped liking that three years ago. I

barely even touched sugar anymore. Why was he acting so strange?

Without missing a beat, Kyler changed into house slippers, washed his hands, and started cooking. When the food was ready, he set out two bowls. Two sets of plates.

I sat across from him. He served me. Poured my soup. Every movement was instinctive. A gentleness I hadn’t seen in years. Time had worn away his edges. The arrogance. The reckless, untouchable pride.

Now, he moved with an eerie stillness. After dinner, he cleared the table. That’s when the

word surfaced in my mind. Still water. That’s what he was. No spirit. No life.

I stayed on the couch. Didn’t move. Kyler came over with the cake, already sliced. He

lifted a piece toward my mouth. “Elowen. Have some.”

I pressed my lips shut. Disappointment flickered across his face. “It’s my birthday.” I

paused. Mentally checked the date. It was. Still, I didn’t react.

Kyler took the cake and ate it himself. Bite after bite, like he was trying to prove something. Then, as if punishing himself, he shoved the rest of it down. The last piece of

frosting disappeared into his mouth. And then he was doubled over the trash can, heaving

violently.

Something tightened in my chest. I grabbed the painkillers from the drawer anyway.

Handed them to him. He took the warm glass of water I offered.

His hands shook so badly he nearly dropped it. “Elowen… you’re… This isn’t like you.

Usually you’d be screaming at me to get lost.” I didn’t answer.

He let out a hollow laugh. “These past three years, every single day, you’ve hated me. You found a hundred different ways to punish me.”

“One day you wouldn’t eat. The next day you cranked the shower to scalding. Then you’d take off and I’d have to chase you halfway across the state. I could barely keep up.”

The more he said, the more wrong it felt. I had never done any of this.
