My Fiancé Married My Long Lost Sister on Our Wedding Day Chapter 05

Those were strong painkillers, prescribed in limited doses based on my condition. Regular pharmacies didn’t carry them.

“Ethan, I might not even live three more days.”

Silence for two seconds. Then my brother laughed. “You’d say something like that just to avoid a family photo? Don’t scare people with death talk.”

Mom smoothed my skirt, her tone like she was humoring a difficult child. “You used to fake stomachaches when you couldn’t beat Sophie at something. When will you grow out of it?”

“Mom, I’m not faking.”

“Fine, you’re not.” She nodded absently. “We’ll go to the hospital right after the photo, okay?”

The photographer clicked the shutter. In the final image, Sophie stood center stage, Ethan’s arm around her waist. Mom and Dad flanked them. My brother on the other side. I was pushed to the edge in a cheap white dress, only half my pale face visible.

Afterward, Dad pulled out a document. “The deed transfer agreement for the old house. It’s in your name, but now Sophie’s back. It should go to her.”

The house was Grandma’s—her last gift to me. She’d held my hand and said, “A girl needs her own place. Somewhere to go when she’s been wronged.” For ten years, I’d trusted my father to keep the deed safe.

“Grandma left it to me.”

“You’ve had it for ten years.” Dad slid the pen across the table. “Don’t be greedy. Give the house to Sophie. You and Ethan can still use the wedding apartment.”

Sophie smiled and tugged Ethan’s sleeve. “But Ethan said the wedding house is mine too. If Lena moves in, I’ll have nightmares.”

Ethan’s face was stone. “Lena can take my old apartment. It’s small, but it’s close to the hospital—good for her recovery.”

About three hundred square feet. A converted basement. No windows. Leaks. No heat in winter. Seven years ago, during his worst days, I’d lived there with him for two years. When the walls grew mold, I covered them with stickers. He’d held me and sworn I’d never suffer again.

Now he was giving that basement back to me as charity.
